V+ connected by component - can i connect a HD DVD via the HDMI socket?

I have had the v+ box installed for over a week now and am very impressed especially the recording facility. I could only connect via component as there is no HDMI socket on the tv but still great quality. Will i be able to connect a HD DVD player which i am contemplating purchasing via the unused HDMI socket on the V+ box or will this create any conflict with the component connection?

I believe the HDMI socket on V+ is only for outputting an image so that idea wouldn't work.
