My Utility/Cloak Room required total refurbishment (10'x8'). Last June, I decided on Howden's for a budget solution. I chose the suggested tradesman, received the quotation/plans, sourced references. However, on the day of installation, the guy didn't show up. No explanation. I then chose a specialist high-street retailer. I really liked the locally-sourced Mereway units. I had the design drawn-up and costed. Problem: they wouldn't quote for the remedial work until they arrived on site to fit the units. Plus, they wanted me to seperately arrange for rubble disposal. John Lewis also offered Mereway units. Their plans were perfect. The problem was they wanted a £1,500 non-refundable deposit before arriving on site: only then would they quote for any added remedial work prior to fitting out the room. Avanti Kitchens arrived at my home. They would only provide a verbal quote. No formal written quote. No plans provided. Time-waster. Finally, I discovered an independent Mother and Daughter owned/managed kitchen/bathroom company. They also offered Mereway units. All prices were quoted up-front. No hidden extra charges. Their fitter finished the work yesterday. I'm thrilled with the result. The total cost was half of that quoted by John Lewis. I cannot believe the number of companies I've had to sift through before obtaining the services required at a reasonable price.
