    Hello There,

I have just successfully placed my order with Sky for an upgrade to Sky + (£65 for new box) however was wondering whether I could use my old box as freeview in another room?

I already have a wire from my room to the lounge so I can watch Sky from upstairs (although I have to change channel in the lounge) so is this possible?

Many thanks for any advice

    Chris

yes it is possible. i had my sky+ installed today and asked the engineer to run a third cable from the dish into the house which he has done. when i have a bit of time i am going to feed that cable into the bedroom and connect my old sky box to it. however be aware that you can only receive the 'freeview' channels and some other freebie ones, on your old sky box doing this. it won't give you access to the full sky package you subscribe to, for that you need to pay for multi-room.

you can of course carry on what you are doing by having a direct feed off your new sky+ box so you can watch all of your paid for channels in the other room, but you will still have to change channels at the sky+ box

also I did not get a new digicard with my sky box, the engineer used my old one. can anyone advise the easiest way for me to get the free-to-air card. thanks

you will have to get a free to view card, and even with this you will not get E4,history,and some of the other better channels available on freeview,
all the bbc, itv and channel 5 are ok though, i installed my old box for my father as he is in a poor reception area, and when i gave him my old 28 sanyo widescreen the picture was stretched to unwatchable, manged to get an old disused dish, fitted it all up and works ok,digital picture 100 times better than analogue

The SKY freesat website is here where you'll find the details of the smartcard and channel lineup.

As you seem to be aware the "free" channels on Dsat do not match the channels that are on Freeview, some are duplicated but many are not.
