HI,

Parents have just gone to INdia on hols for a month.

They have a PAYG orang mobile phone which they can use to call me in the uk from india but they cant phone their mates over there using it.

What do they need to do (or can i do anything from uk) so that they can make Local calls in india on a uk mobile ?

Thanks in advance.

It will end up costing them a fortune!

Ask them to buy a local sim for 1000 rupees, that way they can call local & international. It will work out far cheaper and simpler. They can just swap the sims when they return.

They will need a tri-band mobile for this.

It would be best to get a local SIM for use in country.

I assume there current situation is a UK mobile phone and UK SIM. In that case, even though it is India it should behave like a UK phone - they can dial UK numbers just as they would when in the UK (except it will cost a fortune because it is charged as an international call).

Now if they want to call someone in India they will have to prefix with the India International code (+91) as if they were dialing from the UK.

Remember that this is also an international call even if you are calling someone in the same village.

Cheers,

Nigel

they may need to take their passport with them to get the SIM, they have got quite tight with selling them (at least they have in Tamil Nadu)
