A 10W charger came with the rMini iPad but can a 12W charger be used instead?

Was looking at a way of charging the iPad a bit quicker and wondered if this would work but at the same time not affect the iPad in any way

Might just stick with the 10w lol

I use the standard charger i got with my iPad 3, is that the 12w one?, with my iPhone 5 all the time and my 3GS prior to that...never caused an issue.

If the 12w is faster at charging I wonder why they don't supply it with the iPad retina mini as standard

Hi - The ever confusing power ratings of the Apple iOS device chargers !!

My understanding re the Apple supplied adapters is as follows :

    iPhone (all ) : 5w
    iPad 2nd gen : 10w
    iPad 3rd gen : 10w
    iPad 4th gen : 12w
    iPad mini : 5w
    iPad mini Retina : 10w
    iPad Air : 12w

Being USB chargers they all output 5V but the wattage varies

    5W is a 1 amp charger / 10w is a 2 amp charger / 12w is a 2.1 amp charger.

The 12w adapter can be used to charge all iOS devices safely..

The 5w charger should only be used on the 5W devices..

The power / amperage is pulled from the charger by the device and not pushed..

This means that an iPhone plugged into a 12w charger will probably still only draw 5w and will not charge any quicker. However an iPad plugged into a 5W charger will only be able to draw 5W and will therefore charge at a slower rate and the charger may get hotter than usual.

The power rating should be printed on the adapter but you may need a magnifying glass to read it !!

    i.e. iPad 1 Charger - on Label : 10W USB Power Adapter
iPad 4 Charger - on Label : 12W USB Power Adapter

    Recommendations :

If you have multiple iOS devices with differently rated chargers :

Label the chargers with a larger readable label - i.e. iPad 12w

12w chargers can be used to charge any device
10w chargers can be used to charge any device but probably best not used on the iPad 4 and Air
5w chargers should only be used to charge iPhones and the original iPad Mini

Hopefully the above info makes sense..
