I today purchased a silver Sony NW-HD5 and then started reading the comments here about the problems people have been having with their HD5's.

As a result of that thread, I noticed that it would be useful to have a central database of all of these problems, so that we can use our consumer power to make sure Sony does the right thing for us.

I have created a simple user database, which allows you to add your HD5 to the list if you are having problems with the buttons cracking. It will also show statistics of the various colours and counts, and I will also record the actions of the specific retailers if you supply it.

The information is open for anyone to view and based on the response, we can look to give this information to Sony as a kind of bulk consumer power based "survey", so that not only do they have the information of who and how many people are having problems, but the general public do too.

    The website address is: http://www.junto.co.uk/Consumer/Sony_NW_HD5.aspx

If there is anything you think I should add to the form, or extra data that should be included, or selections that should be in the drop down lists, then let me know. I will add them if I think they are appropriate.

    Regards,

    Ben Powell

Would it be beneficial to include a question on the page regarding the country where the item was purchased?

I know that the country can often be implied from the retailer given, but it might help to have a specific question about it, to see the worlwide extent of the problem.

Just a thought, I won't be offended though if it isn't deemed approprite enough to be included!

Would seem to be a good idea - if it could be easily implemented after all we have had reports of cracks from around the world on here.

Over 50 owners on the poll

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=722

And others that have reported cracks on here but not voted for some reason.

Come on guys (and gals) this lad's gone to a lot of effort here to try to centralise the information and therefore maximise your collective power and your ability to get this resolved asap.

It's a simple equation - the more that register their problem and their dissatisfaction the quicker this will be resolved.

Well, I could say you jumped on my bandwagon there johann, I said I thought all units would be affected sooner or later, oh.... way way back when I was trying to convince you all that my buttons had cracked and it wasn't my fault. But I won't. damn, too late...

The above is a post from the cracks thread which shows that Sony want the information this database provides .....

Clive - hope you don't mind me reproducing your post here.

    No problem.

I've just replied to Sony and also suggested that even if the problem is widespread, the the ratio of units sold to problems reported seems to be low. This could be because, at least initially, a crack is hard to see. Once you know what to look for it is easy to spot. Short-term it may not be serious from my point of view, longer-term the button migh break. I've asked for advice on when I should seek a replacement - there's no point getting one now.
