I came across a car today that I may be interested in, so called the trader to find out some more info. I got the V5 document reference number so I could check the MOT history online, but was surprised to see it only shows it from the end of last year. The car is a 1999 model so should have plenty of history, unless it's just been sat unused for years (which to me seems unlikely given the mileage).

In comparison I did a check on mine and all my tests from 2007/8 onwards are online.

Is it something to be wary of or could there be a valid reason? It's UK spec so unlikely to have been exported/imported.

Could you not just ask the trader? If not, why wouldn't you? Lack of trust?..
If you've got concerns, or your gut tells you to, just walk away. I don't mean to sound patronising, but there are plenty more fish in the sea when buying a second-hand car.

There might have been another log book issued for it and the results are under that reference number, read the text before the listed current results carefully to confirm.

would it have a different V5 ref number if the car had previously been on a private plate?

I hadn't thought of the private plate scenario. According to the vehicle check online it's had a new V5 issued in December so that possibly ties in with the lack of MOT.

The trader doesn't seem too interested as he keeps saying he'll call me back but never does. I might just leave it. Thanks for the input chaps.

It's probably had a private plate.

@Switch625 if the vehicle is local then go and see all the paperwork, some sellers don't seem to be aware of the amount of checks you can do online so think your just time wasting.

He's not local, which is why I wanted as much info as possible before making the 80 mile round trip.

Anyway I've since found some scathing reviews of this particular trader online, so going to avoid.

    Thanks all.
