Hi, want to convert my vinyl collection to MP3. Lots of turntables out there that will do it but does anyone have experiences or recommendations that would help me decide which one to go for? Never one to go for the cheapest! Cheers.

Apologies to Broz for slight hi-jack(!) of thread..............but I am also looking for a usb turntable. Apart from the actual TT though I was wondering about the software side of things. Do you have to manually type in all the track names etc?? Or - once ripped into mp3s of a certain number/size for an album - is Gracenote (or whichever cd data retrieval prog you use) clever enough to match the no of tracks and their lengths to specific albums in its database and therefore provide the data automatically??

PS for me personally Largesack's £500 suggestion is a bit pricey. I'm tempted by the "Guardian Readers Offers" USB TT which is £89 or£99 I think ( there's 2 versions - one does cassette tapes as well) Anyone tried those??
    Thanks.

Hi, unfortunately you do have to manually tag your mp3's, and as far as price goes give that website a try, they do turntable packages less than 500.

    Thanks largesack!

Ukbootlegs - is the Ion OK?! Easy to use etc? I see that Amazon do it for£75 -which looks pretty reasonable! Says comes with Audacity software too -is that easy to use?

    Thanks.

If you use something like MP3tag you will just need to type in the Album Name, it will find the rest and write the track name tags for you.

Thanks for the advice guys. Also had this question posted in the hi fi thread with some good advice there too. One suggestion was not to get a usb turntable but go thru a pre-amp then out thru 'tape out' and capture via the pc's sound card. With a half decent turntable and a decent sound card (M Audio Audiophile) the sound ought to be superior?

Yes, provided you dont mind spending the cash. Those USB turntables are generally very cheap and often a little bit tacky.

Pro-ject's USB turntable is the exception.
