I have a bunch of unused 80-160gb hard drives and id like one to store some movies and music to watch/listen to through my 360, but i dont need yet another plug to go into my mesh of power cables.

Is there any way to have a usb powered hard drive? i know the 360 powers the controllers through the play and charge kit, so dont see why it wouldnt be possible to add a hard drive that can be powered and read/write via the usb port.

Also, would the drive be accessible through the network (via FTP or windows)?

I think they all require more power than is provided by usb so will have to have extra power cable

i thought a 360 could only read drives directly connected or on a PC?
If thats not the case, thats the way around it i think

It will be read only so network, access no.

As for power someone would have to check the physical specs for USB to be sure but I suspect no, not enough juice for a HDD.

ive got a 160gig wd external hard drive thats powered by usb and it works just fine :)

For about £30 you can get a HD case that will take a 3.5" drive, I am sure I saw one that can use USB power in PC Hell.
