USB IR receiver and Harmony 555

I may be being completely dumb but could someone help.

I have bought a USB IR receiver off ebay. I was a under the impression I could install this, tell the 555 I have a Windows Media Center remote and it would control a media center program.

I am trialling Cyberlink PowerCinema and J.River Media Center. I thought these would work with a media center remote setup.

It's a Kingsun 959 IR adapter and it's running on XP Pro SP3.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I'm a Mac user, so I'm just guessing.

Don't you need Windows Media Centre Edition, or whatever it's called, to get a Media Centre remote to work properly? AFAIK, XP doesn't support remote controls.
I'm guessing that the programs that you've tried are designed to be used with MCE, not XP.

There are other options, but you need some software to interpret the USB receiver's codes and to pass them to XP. When I had a PC, I used a program called "girder". IIRC, there's a free trial download.

Oh right, didn't know that about media center. Might give that Girder program a try.

Do you know if there is anyway of checking the IR receiver is installed correctly? Will it show up in Girder?

The driver installed correctly and the device does indicate it is an IR receiver.

I'll have a go tonight.
