    Hi all.

I have transferred some video, photo and music files to a WD external USB hard-drive.

Trouble is, when I try to view the folders on the PS3, it does not recognise any sub-folders.

Is there an easy way to fix this by changing a setting on the PS3 or do I need to re-arrange the whole folder structures on the USB hard drive?

Alternaitvely, can I put some "media server" software on the USB hard drive?

I know that you can on NAS drives, but I'm guessign that is nto applicable to USB hard drives as they are not network driven.

I believe the USB drive has to be formatted as FAT32 rather than NTFS.

You will have to reformat the external Drive to use it :(

I ended up using a 16gb Flash drive to transfer stuff over.

    Press Triangle

    Display all

    That should do the trick

Thats correct, this will only work if the drive is formatted as FAT32. Easy enough done. Think I googled how to add an external hard drive to ps3 and just followed the steps

WD MyBooks and I assume the Passports and all other extrernal drvies already come pre formatted in FAT32.

As has already been mentioned "TRIANGLE" and "Display ALL" will take you to the root of the drive, from where you can nivigate to your files.

By default the PS3 will look for folders names "VIDEOS", "MUSIC" and "PHOTOS", so if you create these and store all your data in them you will not need to "Display ALL" to find your stuff.

One thing to consider is that (*I think*) you can only go one folder deep once inside each of the above folders. I made the mistake of putting all my music in "/MUSIC/ARTIST/ALBUM" and the PS3 can't find any songs (Can see the folders though) unless I use "Display ALL"

I put a few tracks in "/MUSIC/ARTIST+ALBUM/" and they could be found and played fine, I assume the "PHOTOS" and "VIDEOS" folders are the same.

All WD MYbooks come pre-formatted as FAT32. I have one and am using it with my PS3.

Make sure you have made the folders with proper names. MOVIES, MUSIC, GAMES, PHOTO etc

Sorry I didn't make myself clearer, but the disk IS FAT32. And as I suspected this si my problem - I have the correct folders, but the PS3 can only see 1 folder deep.

I have since re-arranged the files with this in mind so now it's all visible.

    Thanks for advice.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know if the WD My book has to be a home version or can you use the essential edition?

    Thanks

    Wolfy!!!!
