USB DACs / Sound Cards and noise

‘On the other hand, it’s one less transformer to inject noise into the signal’

Even an average transformer won’t add any noticeable noise to a preamp, at least none worth the time to try to hear, but having at least some regulators in there will deter some of the power line noise from the laptop getting to the speakers.

Along with an isolator, that may be all you need.

On the basis that it is always better to try cheap things first, I bought the cheapest version of the USB Isolator mentioned above from ebay at a cost of £8.35. This appears to have done the trick and killed the ground loop and / or other USB noise.

Thank you very much to everyone for their suggstions.
