and then to VGA input on a monitor?

Of course, I can get individual cables but just trying to minimise the number of cables I carry around in my work bag so I can hook up my laptop to as many monitors as possible at work (VGA input and DP input).

My experience of super cheap adapters is that they just are not good enough to be used for work - I have a HDMI to VGA one that gets really hot and has some flickering on the screen when used but its possible what you suggest. Personally I would get one from amazon basics but from the used section for around £8
