Numbers game
This one has been on the backburner for a while but it was never going to go away as a federal judge in the US has set new trial dates to decide whether the $450.5 million of damages awarded to Apple from Samsung over patent infringements should stand.
Apple had originally been awarded $1.05 billion until Judge Lucy Koh decided that was a bit steep and slashed Samsung's bill by 40 percent. The new trial will determine whether her actions were justified.
Koh has set the date for the new trial on damages to take place between November 12 and 18. The Court has decreed that no new evidence can be brought to the table by either party so it will hopefully be brief, if not painless.
Judge Koh's decision to reduce the original damages award was based on her belief that the Jury had wrongly calculated part of the damages and that a new trial was needed to determine the correct amount so it could go either way.
