Everything sounds like a bunch of high pitched smurfs.

Whats teh easiest way (without a COMPLETE re-install) to get it back to normal? Movies, invoice game, video feeds from bbc, the lot :(

In Game sound is how it should be, and windows startup / shutdown sounds are normal.

Please help folks :) It's doing my NUT in ;)

The fixes you could try are:

    1. Doing a full system rollback to a time when the audio worked using system restore.
    2. You could try uninstalling your onboard (or sound card) audio drivers then reinstalling them to see if this corrects the problem (the audio drivers should be in you Add/Remove Programs list).
    3. Downloading a full codec pack and installing this, many people seem to have joy with k-lite codec pack for fixing unknown codec problems.
    4. You could also try looking at your list of installed codecs using an app like Sherlock Codec Detective and try to identify any off codecs in the list.

One of these should hopefully correct the problem.

    Anthony,

What is defined as "an off Codec"?

I'm just backing up stuff now incase a fresh install will be easier :(

Also downloading Sherlock to see if this helps. Seems to have hppened since I instlled CoreAVC and PowerDVD. Have deleted/uninstalled both since, but still sounds weird.

Update: Tried taking the machine back 7 days. Nothing, still messed up.
    No Broken codecs in Sherlock

    Nope

Still sounds knackered. I wonder if it's forcing 5.1 when I dont have it on this machine or the headphones?
