I've got a Panasonic TH37PV70F Plasma to which I want to attach a BD player. Given that the kids might like to play games as well (the kids are pretty young) and that we want to watch SD DVD's, I have been eyeing the PS3 as combi BD/DVD/Game machine.

Currently, I am using a Panasonic S325 DVD player which does no upscaling but which can produce 576p. The plasma is capable of upscaling that to its native resolution very well. In other words: we have a very good SD DVD picture.

The TH37PV70F can handle 1080p signals which it then downscales to its native 1024x720 reslution.

If I were to use a PS3 as BD player. BD would go as 1080p to the plasma. No upscaling required, this is th enative signal.

If I were to use the PS3 as DVD-player, it looks from the manual that SD DVD would be upscaled by the PS3 from 576p (on disc) to 1080p before being downscaled by the plasma to 1024x720. I rather would skip this upscaling route and output the DVD-signal in its native resolution. Is this possible as a setup in the PS3? Can I tell it to output the BD/DVD signal in its native resolution (no scaling) so I can let the external apparatus handle everything? Or alternatively, can I tell it to do BD as 1080p and SD DVD as 576p?

I would like to minimize the number of scaling operations between disc and screen.

The PS3 doesn't do any scaling on DVDs at the moment.

So..... if you have a TV that does 1080i or 720p you cannot watch 1080p BR discs? (not a problem for me, my TV does 1080p)

If your TV accepts 1080i your fine but if it can only accept 720p then you'll only be able to watch 480p from a Blu Ray.

The PS3 can play BR discs at 1080i/p or 576p it doesn't support 720p playback so as long as you have 1080 support whether it be interlaced or progressive you can watch in HD other wise your stuck with ED.
