Upscaling

Which is better?

let the tv do the work with a standard dvd (connected via s-vhs), or buy a up scaling dvd to work with the tv and run via hdmi

TV in question is the PX70

hmmmmmm:rolleyes:

whats the general consensus of opinion ?

It really depends on the TV, Plasmas are excellent at doing the job.
In order of connectivity though S-Video is not exactly great.
From best to worst
HDMI
Component Progressive
Component
SCART set to RGB
S-Video
Composite/Scart

What DVD player make and model do you have.

I have a sony davS500 which is a all in one cinema kit, fit for purpose at the time really.

i thought s-vhs provided a decent connection too - interesting !

Just had a little search on the web and one link suggests that Component is available, if you check your manual see if you have progressive output via component.

there is a component out on the back of it. I'll try it and see what happens, do you think a component output to the tv would provide a comparable picture to a upscaling dvd?

If it can go progressive there will not be a lot in it. Just like S-Video remember Component does not carry audio if that matters.

I know there's a switch at the back to change it between interlace and progressive so i can try.

no sound isnt a issue as i can use the cinema kit attached to the amp.

I'll just source a decent component lead now and see what happens.

thanks for your advice though, it's much appreciated

I really doubt if the tellys upscalar can match or beat the dvd upscalars.

So can you recommend a good one?

not silly money either, i like my films and want a good pic but not at silly prices
