When you take say my DV88+ to get a DVD-A board, what is taken out and what goes in?

More importantly, the board that comes out, what happens to it? I'd assume you keep it.

I'm not sure anything comes out but interesting question?

I'd assume Arcam keep it but they might give it to you if you ask? Another interesting question though!

Are you thinking of going into DVD Player production using surplus Arcam parts General? :D

    :D

    Just wondering.

I'd definately want to keep all parts that come out, if any, they're mine after all, and do have some considerable value no doubt.;)

I'm also pondering making mine a black player, not keen on silver.

A new lid and fascia is all that's really required.

So a spare parts factory could begin here.:D

Both are possible. I ordered up a spare black lid a while back but never got round to using it. It's still sitting here unopened. I was surprised (pleasantly) that it was availble at all and for the small sum of £20.

I also know someone who is having his front fascia replaced, although it's black for black but it at least it shows just how much further Arcam are willing to go for their customers :smashin:.

When you upgrade to DVD-A all that happens is the additon of the extra board for the extra channels.

If you have an older DV88/P or DV27 then it needs to have the old Vaddis 3 based mainboard changed so that will have to come out. I can't imagine there's much use for it after that though.

That's interesting, I badly need mine to be black (WAF) surprised its so little money, will have to speak to Arcam :)

Also I had my DV27+ upgraded to DVDA and didn't get any old parts back, but then again I wasn't expecting it and to be frank not what I would do with them
    Regards

Say the board with the video proc had been changed for 'arguements sake', it's worth a fair bit as spare parts.

I'd bet if you put it on EBay you'd get a fair bit for it.

I'm also happily surprised that the lid is a reasonable price too. Just wonder how much the fascia and drawer cover are?

The front fascia for a 27 is £44 - found out when I was enquiring about upgrading my 27 to + spec.

Looking to match that Primare finish then Guy?

    Thanks Ross,

Just spoke to tech support and it seems their prices are pretty reasonable.

For my combination AV8/P7/DV27 for facias and cases it will be around £250 (they are going to email me the actual costs) also you get to keep the original cases and facias

    All looks good then.

Just like the black better than the silver. My wife also prefers the black, but with more passion about it than me.:)

I may just sell the 88 and buy a black 89. I do intend to look at DVD-A too, so it 'may' be worth doing the lot in one go.

I'd much prefer a black 27 but price is the problem.

I'd considered Mark Ward's 27, but after case changes and upgrade costs I may aswell buy new. (Sorry Mark).

I have the same sort of issue.. I have the DAB Arcam in silver and the DV88+ in black.. quite tempted to get the DVD changed over to silver so it matches !..

As for the DV27.. if its roughly £40 for a face and £20 for the top.. + £700 for the DV27 + £400 for the upgrade.. don't you still save about £500?.

    Cheers

    Matt

    I would be tempted if I had the dosh... but I don't ! :)

Good point. Hadn't really worked it out.

Are you familiar with the spec of Mark's 27?

I know it's of minor importance, but my 88 is slightly ahead technically I believe. I'd love to be wrong.

Also I still have about 19 months warranty left on mine.

Yes I have seen it in action.. its the original DV27 but the £400 upgrade charge would put in the Vaddis 5 chipset (which u have in the 88+) + the DVD-A board so becoming the DV27A I believe.

So then it would be the same chipset as your 88+ (though with better components) + the DVD-A playback.. so you would be fully up to date.

Once upgraded you also get a years warranty as well..Hence why I am tempted.. but stony broke :).

As to your 88+ currently being technically ahead.. thats true on the chipset.. but as I have said the DV27 is meant to have higher quality components and its has the sil prog scan board built in which is meant to be better than the vaddis 5 chipset.

Regardless you have a lovely player !

    Cheers

    Matt

The warranty is only on the newly fitted parts.

Opps.. sorry I forgot to put that.. but with the replacement boards i think the only bits not covered are the power supply/drive/Sil prog scan board ?

If you have only just bought the DV88 I think you would feel the loss if you sold it on second hand now (if u see what I mean - I've had mine 2 years or so.. ) so u might as well enjoy it.

I'm still impressed with how good it sounds (picture wise its also great but I only have a 28" widescreen to use on it.. not had the chance to try it on a plasma/projector - not even tried the prog scan :( )

    Cheers

    Hi Guys,
These are the prices I got from Arcam re the colour change for the DV27, bit more that I orig thought but still reasonable as it also includes carriage. So I would have thought that as the DV27 uses a higher grade case and front panel the DV88 should be less

    DV27A
    Part description. Front (black)
    Arcam part number. E113AYB
    Price ex vat. £49.64

    Cover (black)
    E835AYB
    £12.22

    Drawer front (black)
    E111AYB
    £2.80

    Labour
    £40.00

    Total price
    104.66+vat

On the upgrade front fron DV88 to DV27 I think the biggest thing you would notice is CD replay. I did see the pair on a plasma and thought that the 27 had a better picture but to be honest it wasn't an in depth review.

    Cheers
    John

Sticker. Thanks for that. I wouldn't pay labour though as those parts are easy to fit yourself.

The fascia is the hardest part, but a few minutes and you'd have it done.

Matt, I'm a bit luckier than that as I didn't pay full whack for my 88+ so it's basically a straight swap + the upgrade and case.

They are easy enough to fit but you might invalidate your warranty in doing so. Offcourse if the FMJ 27 you're looking at is already out of warranty then no problems :).

ps. Buy it or I might.......;).

ooh er missus, I wouldn't attempt to do this myself as its brand new, so is the AV8 and P7. I wouldn't forgive myself if I f***ed up £7,000 worth of gear, come to think of it neither would the missus, think I would become a joanne

Just make sure they send you back your silver casing as it'd be worth money on EBay for sure.

Certainly will mate, they told me it was no problem. Must say I've been pretty impressed with Arcam's tech support, very efficient and friendly.

Matt, I've literally just sold my 88 so I'm now going to offer to buy Mark's player.

Been fun this thread. And the wife told me to stop spending.:):):)
