I've been thinking about upgrading my system to 4K. I've currently got Sony HW40 and am very pleased with it. We watch a lot of 3D too. Whic projector would be the ideal 4K upgrade at less than 3K point (ideally around 2K) with good 3D? Also, how much will I get for selling / trading the Sony HW40?

You won't get real 4k for £3000 sadly.

The epson EH-TW7200 and 9200 seem to be the current darlings in that price bracket that can do faux k and 3D.

The BenQ W1700 might also be worth a look if you don't mind the problems associated with DLP.

I am interested in this too. I have a HW50 and have the itch...

I want 3D and have looked at the Benq and Optoma, but we may have to wait another year to get everything at good quality for £2k

Thanks. Yes, you're right. Options still are very few, and true 4K is at least £5.2K. I'm not too concerned about true vs faux because the reviews seem to suggest it's very difficult to discern the difference. 3D is the key for me. The new Optoma projectors don't support 3D and Epson's 3D isn't very good. JVC is excellent, but that needs budget bumping up to £4K.

I suppose I'll start with upgrading my TV and AVR and getting a UHD player this year, and look at projector options in 2019.

I recently got an OLED for £1k and it is amazing for 3D and blu Ray. However it doesn’t come close to my home Cinema for that true big screen and big sound experience.

I've got both; TV and projector. TV for regular watching and projector for movies. Everything needs upgrading to 4K. I've just signed up to Sky Q, so can start watching more 4K.

My AVR is Marantz SR7009 + PM6005 for driving 11 speakers (7.1.4 Atmos). I'm planning to replace these with Denon X6400H, and upgrade my Oppo 103D to Panasonic UB9000 if priced sensibly.

The best approach will be to upgrade bit by bit until complete by end of next year.

Sounds like a good plan. The Denon looks like a good piece of kit.

Epson 9300 if you have a bat cave environment, if not, save the money and get a 7300

Always a compromise, especially at your price point.

Personally I hate 3D so can’t really comment/recommend if this is an essential for you.

I had a 9300, it’s a very good projector capable of producing stunning images, even in 4K HDR.

They’ve recently updated their firmware which really helped with the HDR mode, Harpervision settings were also very good.

Thanks. I'll wait another year and see what the market is like. Sony have managed to drop the price to £5.2K, hoping they drop further to £3K mark by the end of next year. We love 3D and I have close to 100 blu rays in 3D. So this is essential for me.

      I am waiting on Optoma UHD51A 4K HDR 3D DLP Projector, supports frame-packed 3D.
Still using Optoma HD33 6-7 years now.

This gives a good comparison between the various resolutions:

4K IST NICHT 4K ??? Eshift, neue DLP Technik...

The DLP 4k gets very close to true 4k. JVC aren't in the same ballpark.

A cheaper DLP '4k' is the Acer VL7860. Native contrast and rainbows are the caveats. The plus is the laser in terms of lifetime and brightness for HDR. The most recent firmware should be installed.
      Optoma UHZ65 has similar specs.

Sony are putting the agony on IMO, and the margin they must get between the VW260ES and the 760ES is eye-watering.

If also you want is as much resolution as possible then you can get a UHD550X for £1500.

But all reviews still seem to suggest that the JVC's have some of the best implementation of projected HDR and in terms of what you 'can see' give one of the best offerings on the market.

I personally would wait. Don't chase resolution IMO, it's not the be all and end all, you implied as much when saying about faux v 4K.

WCG would be an improvement in theory. But demo's I saw were subtle at best.

HDR for projectors - I think this has a way to go, hence saying wait a while. Lasers may be where this has a big advantage - but the costs are way out at the moment.

If you have immersive audio setup, then buy the UHD discs now, enjoy the audio, to save a double dip later, but I would hang back on upgrading the PJ.

Your 40W will be decreasing in value though, assuming you need to sell it to fund the new one. Or you could keep it for 3D :).

No, but all the reviews I've read so far allude to Epson's 3D being not so good.

i’ve never seen it on the 7300 but cannot imagine it would not be good or at least as good as the 7200 and that was pretty good imo

I have watched a few 3d movies on the 7300 and I think it is good (I have nothing to compare it to as my previous projector was not 3d). The Resident Evil films in particular have some brilliant 3d in them.

I have an Epson 9100 and yes its an older model but I think the 3d is terrible, so much ghosting on certain films that we have switched over to watching the 2d version.

Just to follow up on my last post, we have just finished watching Geostorm and it took loads of fiddling about with settings to get the 3d looking half decent nearly all of the background scenes had ghosting to a certain degree.

However I wouldnt like to comment on the faux 4k projectors not having seen 3d in action with them, but I doubt its much better!
