Hi all, I'm looking to upgrade my PC mainly ready for Flight Sim 2020 but also just in general for gaming. I have a budget of around £1k not including money from sales of parts I will be replacing, so maybe closer to £1300-1400. My current setup is broadly as follows:
  • Asus Z-97-A USB3.1 motherboard
  • i7-4790K CPU
  • 16GB DDR3
  • GTX 1080
  • 1TB M.2 SSD (+ 2x smaller SATA SSDs)
  • Corsair H60 CPU cooler
  • Corsair Carbide 330R case
  • AOC AGON 27" 1440p 165Hz G-sync montor
My plan is to keep the case, the SSDs, the monitor and my powersupply (which is 600W), but everything else is fair game perhaps with the exception of the cooler as I think that is compatible with what I think I should go for. Here is what I was thinking but I have been out of the upgrade loop for a while now and it seems like AMD Ryzen processors may be preferred over Intel these days for gaming so feel free to suggest an alternative Ryzen setup.
  • ASUS Prime Z390-P LGA1151 motherboard (~£105)
  • Intel Core i7-9700K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor (~£315)
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 (~£130)
  • ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2080 Super Advanced Edition 8GB GDDR6 (~£815)

Upgrade your PC but keep your existing GPU until next month when Nvidia will be releasing their RTX 3000 series graphics cards.

Did you see the Digital Foundary video on MSFS ?

Personally, I would wait 2 months but if you want it for the next week or so - I would go with this:

AMD Ryzen 3700X - £260
B550 board - £145
RTX 2070 Super £475 (Or RTX 2080Ti - £1040)
32 GB GSkill 3200 DDR4 - £130

The RTX 2080 Super is just not worth it to be honest (I have one!).

Ah so there is a new batch of GPUs coming, in that case I think I will wait for a couple of months, thanks for the heads up. I saw that video yes, I have just been avoiding videos of people flying over landmarks as I would like to experience that myself.

Yeah I think I will wait then as I want to buy it all at once. Thanks for the advice about the 2080 Super, I hadn't considered the 2070 super but I had read that the improvement of the 2080 TI was not worth the extra cash but that the super over the standard 2080 was worth it.

I would say this about the 2080 range:
  • If you want the best, no compromise - then the 2080 Ti is unchallenged
  • If you want something that will run everything on Ultra then the 2070 Super is a far easier choice for £350 less money than the 2080 Super. The 2080 Super sits in that uncomfortable middle ground.
In hindsight, I should have spent the extra £250 on the Ti.

Waiting is the best choice. I suspect that NVidia will have a true generational leap with their 3xxx cards just like AMD did with the Ryzen CPUs.
