Have a Xen 200 (256meg), great piece of kit and am thinking of sellling it as I need more space.

    have approx £130 to spend

Was thinking about the 1gig Xen 400

Will be using this predominantly (spelling) in a caterham so needs to be robust

    Any other suggestions

BTW The one thing I like about the Xen is the power output of 40mw

    Would also prefer rechargeable battery

Whats the Rio carbon like or is a nono due to a hard drive being femmer

Rock-hard suspension? I'm sure HDD portables will hold out, but it seems like you're looking more towards Flash players. I like the Cowon flash players for their combination of sound, ability to muck around with said sound and features. It can be slightly tricky to figure out though. Creative players are fairly cheap, have pretty good sound and probably the fastest loading times for a flash player. iRiver are in the middle of refreshing their range with some really nice new flash players, but they aren't in the UK yet. The Sony's have good sound, great looks and a nice OLED display (which is invisible in daylight, so no go on an open topped Caterham I guess) but very slow loading. I think you should narrow down your requirements before people can say much about recommendations, because the likelihood is that most of the posting members here will be figuring out which Sony best suits your needs :D

The hard facts are that the Xen 400 1gig is £130 and I can get a Rio for £90.

To me this changed my options due to cost

The guys on BlatChat recon there is no problem with hard drive players so this open up things.

Like I say I am on a budget and the Rio at £90 (http://www.retailonline.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=2&products_id=150) seems like excellent value and it has 6gig
