    Hi all

Looking to upgrade my much loved Hitachi PJ-TX10 to a new DLP, most probably the much raved about Infocus 4805, Just curious at this stage if there are any known problems with this model and also as a matter of interest whether DLP Pj`s suffer from dust blobs/ dead pixels, I have never suffered with either of these but I know many have.

    Thanks and regards

As far as I am aware, most DLP machines have sealed optics so dust blobs should not be a problem.

I cannot answer the dead pixel query.

Anyone else care to take the baton ???

By the way, I did see the 4805 running on saturday. Very nice indeed.

    Thanks,

    Captain Benefit.

I demo'd bothe the Themescene H30 and the 4805. The 4805 picture is great, if you get one you won't be disappointed...(bought the H30 though, couldn't justify the £300 extra as the picture quality was very similar...)

DLPs can have dead pixels, the Sharp Z200E I had did have one from new, it's just with only 1 panel instead of 3 the chances are of course 1/3 that of an LCD.

Check out the new Themescene H30A, will blow away the Infocus and is cheaper at £1145 inc VAT, also you get a 3 year "no dead pixel" warranty

Got myself a 4805 last week and have been infinitely impressed with it under all circumstances. Picture quality is pretty amazing even projecting to my white wall.

Thanks for the help so far, I have had a demo of the H30A and the 4805 at my local sevenoaks and came away unimpressed with the H30A for several reasons added to the fact that imo it looks like a toy and has that horrible adapter to plug in the back for component input.

Sorry Chilly , but please make sure you get your facts right :nono: , it can really cause big probs for the release of new units, Optoma havn't even shipped the H30A yet, so you would have seen the old H30 at sevenoaks, the spec on the new H30A blows the infocus away.

Each to their own, just goes to show that having a demo is essential.

Is anyone actually reading what is being said :suicide: Chilly had a demo of the old H30 against the 4805, and not the new H30A

Have you spoken to Optoma, or you have just clarified that Sevenoaks either have no idea what they are talking about or have lied to you about what you are looking at, I have spoken to Optoma yesterday and today and both Optoma's sales manager and my rep have confirmed NO H30A's have been released to anyone.

Which Sevenoaks was it, I know most of them, i'll ask them?

I often wonder how many of these places set up their equipment for demos. Ntslik deals with projectors and I think he has a clue ;), but many high street shops merely take something out of its box and just turn it on. Not many know how to set up black and white levels or to try and get the correct settings for film and colour temperature (which are often just a case of selecting the correct setting in the user menu).

Seeing a DVD played back in 'Game' mode on a tv setting can look vastly different to the same pj in film mode and using a colour temp at or close close to D65. Not having a good light controlled room can add to the degredaton of the image (though this would be equal for all pjs in the same room, but brighter ones will appear to have an advantage), so overall the impression you end up getting may not be indicative of the products capabilities.

The original H30 got a great deal of praise for it's image, so I'm surprised to see it slated. Of course, we all have different preferences for what we want out of an image, so that might be the case here.

It's just a shame that if someone can't get the chance to see things even half optimal, then both the customer and the manufacturer aren't getting a fair deal from the retailer. Of course, I could be wrong. :)

    Gary.

The H30A I saw was at the Aberdeen branch of sevenoaks, please call them if you need to clarify this for whatever reason, however the unit was an H30A

I have to agree 100% with your post - in regard to retailers poorly setting up projectors. I live in Australia and only 2 companies deal with the Infocus product and only one of those has the H30 also. So I decided to head to the company that had both - and have decided on the 4805 - but after checking the menus of both units I find their settings are set at factory default! Not one change made, you can imagine how hard this makes comparisions.

If one projector out of the box is better clibrated for video than the other people will tend to buy the one that looks best. In this case I think the H30 looked slightly better but after convincing the guy I would return it to default I made some changes and after that much prefered the 4805 and as I left I heard hiim telling his other salesman

"check out what this guy just did - The 4805 ****s on the H30 now!!" :suicide:

Goes to show sometimes its worth taking over the controls for yourself.

I just spoke to Andrew in Aberdeen Sevenoaks, who said "umm no, we don't have one, it's not even on our list" I asked that I had someone quoting they had had a demo on the new H30A yet as it hasn't even been released in the UK, who was getting confused?? he went off and returned to say he had not had one.

Just to confirm (i might get a little badge) but I am the offical first dealer to ever see a H30A, oh and for just a laugh check out the spot the difference, answers on a postcard.

What I am saying Chilly is, I am not trying to slate you or any demo you had, but your comments are completely incorrect and false as you are making comments on a projector which you have never seen.

Seems even if you have a large number of stores and Sevenoaks above your door, you can't get away from employing incompetent staff.

Quite outrages really, it's one thing to do a demo, it's quite another when you claim a model is something it isn't

Perhaps they should have changed the model number more radically if it's such a step forward in spec?...PJ

Or Sevenoaks could employ people that know what they are talking about, I don't think I could blame Optoma if I walked out of a Sevenoaks shop with a H30 under my arm after they had just told me i was buying an H30A.

Whether this is the fault of Chilley or Sevenoaks, we have seen something utterly untrue posted as if fact.
I'm sure this kind of thing happens all the time on the AV Forums and I'm glad Neil added is contribution to help clarify the situation.
Chilley, a reply from yourself confirming that your initial post was wrong would be appreciated.

I have now taken a look at details of the American H31, a model which I understand to be the same as the new H30A, it would appear from the differences visible that I had indeed been looking with interest at the H30, I would like to make it clear that I genuinely believed that I had seen the H30A, I do not feel I have been misled by anyone however I would obviously like to appologise to anyone who feels agrieved by any comments that I have made on this subject, I would also like to point out that my initial reason for posting was to obtain any helpful comments on the 4805 and any downsides with DLP PJs in general and most definately not to provide the basis for an argument in any way or indeed to look for comparisons with other machines,
Once again my appologies to Stuart and anyone who may feel offended as a result of my inaccurate wording.

    Regards

I was so shocked that Sevenoaks were trying to falsely sell you an H30 while stating to you they had a pre-launch model I am reporting them to Optoma, it's important to this industry that we Specialist retailers try and stay ahead of the standard electrical stores, i.e. Currys, Dixons, Comet etc

But for a Sevenoaks store to make actual false claims to simply try and get you Chilly to part with your money for something it wasn't is a disgrace. Something my company would never try and do.

I'm surprised your not taking things further with Sevenoaks Chilly??

I think it's a big mistake to assume that it's the fault of Sevenoaks.

As one of the managers at the Aberdeen Sevenoaks store, I have been reading this thread with increasing bemusement. Everyone has the right to free speech but let's stick to fact.

For the record, Aberdeen Sevenoaks does not (and never has) displayed, demonstrated or indeed ever had on the premises ANY Optoma projectors in the three months since the new store opened for the simple reason that Aberdeen branch in not an Optoma dealer. So I'm not sure where Chilly had the Optoma/Screenplay comparative demo, but it sure wasn't here! We do have a Sim2 Domino 30-H on permanent demonstration, but somehow I don't think that fits the description of "toy", despite having the number 30 and the letter H in the name.

So, perhaps not surprising that one of our staff sounded confused to be told that we had an Optoma H30A.

Sad to see that some people seem all too willing to jump to the conclusion that we "lied" or "don't know what we're talking about" or "make false claims".

I think your issue is with Chilly and not us, I kind of hoped that Chilly had half a brain to be telling the truth but it appears when he states you had a pre-launch model he is fact talking out of his rear, as I had said before, Specialist retailers like us need to try and stay one step ahead of the normally un-knowledgable box shifting retailers and then you get some idiot like Chilly blatently lie and at the same time drag you guys into it.

Stuart - I could only assume Sevenoaks had given false information to Chilly when it actually turns out Chilly doesn't know his a**e from is elbow or a H30 from a H30A, I know we are all on a learning curve but when an individual starts making claims about what stores supposedly states, they need to be banned, they are not doing anyone any favours.

I would welcome Chilly's response seeing as he won't accept PM's, you don't think he works for Infocus :nono:
