Upgrade Pioneer Dv444 to Tosh 220e, 420e or other?

I am about to upgrade my Pioneer DV444 due to the purchase of a new Panny 32pb50 TV which doesnt seem to like the player.

What DVD player should I get? I was looking at the Toshiba 220e or 420e. I dont need built in DD as my TV has that so is the 420 still worth the extra £30?

What about Panasonic DVD players? Are there any good ones? Would one of these be better with my Panny set?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

P.S. Whatever I get needs to play back SVCD's as I use them a lot on my Pioneer.

What do you mean the 444 doesn't like your TV ?

Is it what I think it is - light patches ?????

yep, yep, yep.
I have wrote to Pioneer, but their great customer services (!) basically denied everything and anyone reporting anything anwhere.

I've settled by using the player in S-Video mode rather than RGB mode.

I have got a Toshiba 420e, hopefully this player will be fine.

Do you think somebody should start a new topic stating that there is a definite problem with the 444 and panny sets to save people having to search around for ages to find it out for themselves?

How does picture quality compare, putting the light paches aside ? Or isn't there much between the 2. ?

Havent tried it yet, but I have heard that the Toshiba 220e and 420e are the best picture for the price.

The 220e was too expensive when I got my 444 or I would have got that to start with.

I will let you know how it performs later...

Picture quality - excellent better than the pioneer!

No problems at all with this player!

I havent got any DVDr or DVDRW to try, sorry Ironduke!

Have you looked on www.vcdhelp.com to see if the compatability list on there states if DVDr and RW work?

that's great to hear.
How much & where did you get the 420 ? Is it macrovision disabled as well as region free ?

Oh, does anyone want to buy a pioneer 444 ?!:)

£169 from electrocentre.com - same place as dvdplayers.co.uk

Havent tried for macrovision yet, but should be (bought from the same place as the pioneer and that was macrovision disabled).

Well it has handled the SVCD's I have thrown at it so far better than the Pioneer did.

Dont know about DVDR, We have a DVD+RW drive at work but no spare discs to try it with.
