I have caught the upgrade bug!! I was considering upgrading my 2900 to denon 3910. However I am aware the marantz are more sonically talented than their denon brother in the same price range.

Connection wise i am quite happy with Marantz DVI connection as opposed to denon 3910 which has both DVI & HDMI.

Will i notice any improvements upon upgrade ?
Is it really worth upgrading to Marantz 8400 from denon 2900. By the way i am getting a brand new marantz for only £600.

I want a dvd player that sound great with plain old CD and multichannel music.Denon 2900 is just average with CD's.

Any opinions will be greatly appreciated

Interested to hear what others have to say on this also - I can get the 8400 for S$1600 (at 3:1 exchange rate - around GBP530) and can most likely get this discounted the earlier it gets to the 8500 coming out. Otherwise I am waiting on the 6500 which should be around GBP200 here in Singapore.

Having just read the review of the Denon 3910 in Hi-Fi News, which is a very well respected and long standing audiofile magazine, have stated, and this refers to the audio side of things only and not the video section, was basically that the 2900 trounces the 3910. So given that I would stick with your 2900. It will be interesting to hear what others have to say on this.

Just a quick question, but if you're interested in upgrading mainly for the CD playback, why not put the money towards a dedicated cd player. 400GBP will buy you an Arcam CD73T which in my opinion wipes the floor with any DVD player at this price point. Of course this is only if you're happy with the 2900 in other respects.

CD playback is very important, but i also want to connect to new plasma using DVI ,which i suppose gives a better quality picture.

Many thanks to you all for your opinions

Arcam dv89 cd playback is very good, no dvi but a good buy now at half price. Had a demo of dv78 against cd73, 78 sounded better. Then dv78 against dv89, ended going for the 89.

marantz 8400 is a clone of the pioneer 757 i think, so has the same problems as the 757. the sonic side is beefed up however. but it is based on old pioneer video tech

Do not go the Denon DVD route, absolutely anything would be better if you want a machine that will actually play DVDs. Be warned, I've been tortured by them for over a year now.

I am in a right predicament.
I have already sold my denon 2900 and want to upgrade to a dvd player pretty good with CD and must have either DVI/HDMI.

I wanted Marantz 8400,but they have been sold out. I don't want pioneer 868 so it seem i am either stuck with denon 3910 or the upcoming marantz DV9500!!

I am going for the homecinema show at novotel hotel at hammersmith london this weekend,to try out both denon 3910 and tyhe marantz 9500. maybe they will help me make up my mind.

Quick look at AVLand and the DV9500 is close to twice the price of the 3910. Perhaps you should be looking at the DV7500 as well, or wait until the replacement DV8500 comes along. I hear it will be available in Asia either end 2004 or early 2005. DV7500 has HDMI, and I will be hoping to demo this soon in Singapore to see what PQ is like (if it is significantly better than DV6500 thru component - I do not need HDMI yet).....
