can you help me guys decide which upgrade path to go for, please?

i've got:

3 x 1GB DDR-400 Kingston KTH D530/1GB
1 x 1GB DDR2 667 Kingston KTH XW4300/1G
1 x ATI Radeon 9800GT AGP graphics card
1 x ATI FireGL V3100 PCIe workstation graphics card (haven't tested recently)
2 x PATA 80GB HDD

i'm not gonna bother listing the other bits as i will just replace them if needed.

now i've got a very limited budget (< £200) which was the root of the problem anyway :)

my choices are the following:

option 1:

AMD X2 4200 s939 - £45
foxconn s939 mobo - £40
sonata III case - £70

going this route allows me to use my DDR memory and AGP card

option 2:

C2D e4400 - £75
GA 965 DS3 mobo - £65
2 x 1GB value memory - £55

this will provide me some future upgrade paths, like moving to quadcore but definitely more expensive. or i could ditch the 2GB memory for the meantime and buy the sonata III case first..problem is if my FireGL doesnt work anymore.

option 3

c2d e4400 - £75
asrock dualvsta mobo - £40
sonata III case - £70

this will allow me to move to C2D and yet still use my DDR memory and AGP card, downside is i can only go upto 2GB as that's the max the board can support.

ideally, i would like to have at least 2GB memory (preferably use up all the 3GB that i have), usage will be as Media Center PC, test bed for different systems using vmware/virtual PC....main OS is vista ultimate....games will be minimal and definitely won't be the hardcore stuff :)

any advice is greatly appreciated,

recommend me alternative motherboards and case pls.

thanks a lot guys

MSI K9AGM2-FIH Socket AM2 690G and SB600 Chipset 8 channel audio HDMI onboard VGA mATX £43.75

Antec Sonata III Piano Black Quiet Mid Tower Case - With 500W EarthWatts PSU £76.99

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (2.5GHz) Socket AM2 Energy Efficient L2 1MB (2x512KB) Cache Retail Boxed Processor £66.50

Comes to just under £200 from ebuyer - the Mobo has an HDMI output too - I'd sell the GC's & the DDR ram in the classifieds if I were you to raise a bit more cash.

i would say option 2 personaly.

if you FireGL card is PCi-e then i should be fine in the DS3 board.

The AMD route is really dead. no further upgrades and the advantage of the C2d cpu's is massive over even the top end X2 AMD cpu's.

Personally i would sell your existing bits and bobs that you don;t need and that should suffice for another £50 or so giving you enough for your case as well.

2 replies and both suggested that i sell my old bits and move to the new ones.

i think that's exactly what i'm gonna do then. :)

how much do you guys think i can get for my 3 x 1GB memory sticks from the classifieds?
