    hi all

i have a rotel ra-1062 amp and want to upgrade my speakers & cdplayer to
    match.

my current components are nad c542 and mission 780se's

my first thoughts were to get the matching rotel cdplayer and b&w 705's
but want some other opinons on other kit i should demo.

my budget is around £700ish each

speakers must be standmounts (small room)and good allrounders

    any suggestions?

    cheers criggy

    Hi Criggy,

Don't have any suggestions just yet, but what exactly are you unhappy about with your current system that you would like to improve.

Your current system is very good.

    Cheers

The QUAD speakers are excellent for around the 300-400 quid mark.

    thanks for the replys

harry,i ain't unhappy with sound i have, but i know i'm not doing the amp justice
with my speakers especially.the cd player, i must admit,i have no problem with.

for me the speakers make the biggest difference in sound.
i tried my brothers monitor audio b2's and they sounded very harsh and had boomy
bass compared to my missions.only £100 difference in price, big difference in sound.

for me depth and imaging are what i'm after sound wise.
so what would you recommend for standmounts £800-£1000?
i will keep the cd player for now

    gerbilly
i listened to quad 11l when i bought the mission's and did not like them
although the finnish on them was superb!

    cheers criggy

The 780 ses are good speakers, I reckon a bigger improvement could be made with your cd player - pehaps a MF xray v3 and see how that change goes.

As ever demo everything thoroughly. If you're wanting a big jump on your speakers, sell your 780's and put proceeds with the remander of your cash and try for a set of sonus faber or the like.

For the Rotel Amp, speakers come to mind that should be on your list.

    B&W 705
    Dynaudio Audience 52 SE
    PMC TB2

And on the strength of Ian J’s opinion from the Bristol Show, but I would suggest you do a search for Totem Rainmakers. I didn’t make it to the show (living in Australia), and haven’t heard them (like most things here, they are not available).

    Hi Criggy,
You have a few options. Problem you will have is getting the balance. If you spend too much on the CDP you'll find your amp will be the weak link.... It's a never ending, uphill struggle. :(
I'd say you'd probably gain more by upgrading the speakers and possibly adding a second (power) amp and bi amping whatever speakers you get. I can definately rate the PMC range. B&W would probably sound good too.
Not really disagreeing with Deanym, but I would say in the price range you're looking at, a CDP upgrade may not give you the stunning improvement you're looking for. It may be only a very subtle difference. I have to say I don't start noticing big differences between CDP's until the price goes up a bit. Keeping your current CDP and adding an external DAC may be a cheaper option but again might only show up a subtle difference. Going second hand or Ex dem would give you a lot more spending power.
    Good luck.

thanks for all the suggestions guy's

think what i will do is just replace the speakers for now for two reasons
1,for me they give the biggest improvement in sound
2,if i get a cd player & speakers i won't know which is giving me the improved sound

then later in the year i'll upgrade my cd player.
i'll let you all know what i get

    criggy
