I`m rather :confused: how can you upconvert a DVD. If regular pal progressive is 575p then how can you make it 1024p. If its original resolution is 575 how can you make it higher? I just don't get it.

It's magic. :D

It's simple in principle but rather complex in practice. Put very simplistically, pixels are created (interpolated) by taking the colour values of adjacent pixels and giving the new pixel a colour half-way between them. In the most extreme case of black and white the interpolated pixel would be mid-grey.

Of course, this doesn't work 100% of the time and causes undesirable side-effects, such as making the image 'softer' (a bit blurred), which in turn needs a process of 'sharpening' to try to undo.

It's highly mathematical and there is no 'right' way to do it, there are a large number of algorithms used in scalers and some open-source PC software, all trying to do the same thing and all with strength and weaknesses.
