Since we're having some communications problems it's probably easier for those involved (myself, DFour, Kazman & Tons of Fun) to plan the "SSO" here. :)

    Subwoofers being tested are:

    BK XLS200
    MS 309
    Kef PSW2500
and whatever goodies Tons brings :)

Also available if we have time will be the superbudgets to see how they compare:

    Eltax A10
    Paradigm PDR10

I'll add more details when I've got some of this work done.

Hell- as long as somebody sends me a map I should be fine :). Probably going to be a 909 coming with me as the 409 is on a very tight schedule to finish its PP tests.

Still that's not a bad thing. Pending the success of this test of smaller subs, I would be equally keen to throw a 909 to the subs in the £500-700 point in the future as well. No point going against an SVS yet- MS's "wheely bin of doom" project is still in its early days.

The 909 should provide a good reference WRT to the best we can expect if it's as good as I hope it will be :)

As I mentioned earlier, I've got a few ideas as to how we should go about the testing which I'll post when I have time. I'd like to get some tangible results from the session rather than all of us arguing that ours is the best ;) Obviously lots of loud bassy films will be included in this! :smashin:

I suppose I will have to email everyone my addy so you can use map quest or the aa to find out how to get to my place. The other option is to meet in Tesco car park and then follow me home depending on which direction you are all traveling.
Heres a start my postcode is RG12 0UX. Will hav eto wait till next year to see if i can afford to upgrade to the SVS brigade :D

At worst, Tons only works across the river from me so we could always exchange information in person one lunchtime!

    Heres a question for tons.

When MS test subs do they also test with aftermarket power cables as well as the normal ones? Is so do they make any difference??

I only use a standard cable. I am trying to keep my spending down

I should be fine with just the address, Currently using Tom Tom navigator on my PDA (was unable to specify sat nav in my new car GRrrr!!!!), as long as it can find the street in its database, I should be fine :).

A phone number in case of emergencies would also be useful, I'll send mine out tonight in an email from my pop account :).

The Eltax I'm bringing is a sub 10 not one of the Atomic ones, but it should perform similar to the Atomic range I believe. The Eltax can apparently go lower than the KEF, so would be interesting to find out if this is true in the tests :)

Never tried TBH but in theory at least, anything that reduces RF isn't going to do any harm. The Class D amps in the 3/4/909 would probably benefit less than the class B's in the 502 fronts.

If I get time I'll also try and setup a report form for each of the subs if people think it's a good idea, then we can come prepared with details like dimensions, specs, feet type etc

Knowing the dimensions of the room would also be good. :)

The room is 3.25m*4*2.3 w/l/h. Carpeted with curtains over a bay door and a large bookcase on the same wall. The report form sounds like an excellant idea. :smashin:

I think we could add Manufacturers claimed figures and actual test figures too :)

The Price section should include rrp and actual purchase cost, to give a reflection of what kind of discounts were available at time of purchase. :) Otherwise it is fine imho.

OK, home with some time now so here's an outline of perhaps how the test ought to go. As I've mentioned, I'm keen to get something tangible from it as well as pratting about with loud explosions :D

    Stage 1
Decide which cables are best and use them for all the subsequent testing. Possibly not worth bothering with and using the DFour's Mark Grant, but I've a few that I've made that would be interesting to try. I've also made a mains cable that I think is a significant improvement over standard ones.

    Stage 2
Judge the models on looks and build quality. We can line them all up before we start the rumbling and decide that mine's the best. ;)

    Stage 3
Setup the subwoofer being tested. I'd suggest for all of them that the phase is set to 0deg and that they're tested in the same room position. The amplifier controls shouldn't be changed for any of them but the subwoofer gain should be calibrated using the SPL meter as would normally be done - something like 75dB using the Yam's test tone. The important thing is to keep the settings as close as possible.

    Stage 4
Get a frequency response from each model (using a signal generator and SPL meter). These can then be plotted and compared directly for a flat response, extension and what the knee looks like.

    Stage 5
    The subjective testing begins :D
Test the models using CD and DVD material that we're all familiar with, it might be best to decide on the day what we've got and what we all know but this can easily be discussed here beforehand.

Having made at least rough notes from those basic tests we should have a fairly good idea of how all the models fit together.

Obviously that's just a brief plan that I've concoted as I've typed so the more input (from anybody) the better!

Edit: The idea is obviously to compare the subs and have fun, so if I'm being too technical or sucking all the life out of it please let me know.

I've been following this gathering from the start and must say it sounds like an excellent idea. A real world test of comparable subs. Look forward to reading the end results.

FWIW my money would go on the BK.

    Good luck!

I think the KEF PSW2500 might be a bit of a surprise though, but we'll see. :)

We can probably get our first thoughts out that day (maybe even as we go!) but I think it might be a while if you want a full report of the day.
