I see the Yammy V2600 will do up conversion to HD or something like - I just wondered what it all meant?

Can it convert a crap picture to a good one? How can it create something with better definition than the quality it receives?

Stupid questions maybe but just wondered what all the fuss was about?

it won't improve the quality of the source, but it may do a better job at upscaling the picture than your HD screen's built in scaler, depends how good that is!

    Basically, you can't polish a turd :D

So what does it actually do in simple terms?

takes a 720x576 interlaced input from say dvd, then upscales it 1280x720 and de-interlaces it to progressive (or upscales to 1920x1080i). This will probably work really well with your 37PV500, as it would match the vertical res. of the panel (1024x720). However it may not do as good a job as the plasma will. (i would imagine it will do a better job). You also have the convenience of one cable to the plasma

So does it create the picture from the lines then split them down again?

How does it change 720 to 1280 or is that the magic bit? I am not up on interlaced / deinterlaced and progressive etc

Hang on, isnt that upscaling? I thought unconversion was putting all your inputs into your receiver, whether it be via component, hdmi, rgb etc, and then the receiver will convert the imput so it can output in whatevr form you are converting it. For example, upscaling to HDMI means that all your inputs from multiple sources will be converted so that they can all be output via a single HDMI lead. Doesnt improve quality, just means you only need to run a single lead to your plasma.

Thats how i understood it anyways

The v2600 upscales all sources into what you want, say 720p or 1080i, in simple terms, it will probably do a much better job then most internal scalres on most plamsas and projectors.

Yep thats the idea, although no ones got there hands on the yamaha to see how/well it works. If it offers everything it promises and is not buggy then yam have a best seller in the upper midrange sector.

I can't say i have ever had a yamaha product that hasn't done whats on the box, and in a bug free way, so it looks good.
