Unlock new 3gs

I have the chance to buy a new 3gs, that was an insurance replacement, from a friend. It needs to be connected to itunes for the initial setup, then i want to jailbreak it. Could i use any custom firmware to do this or will I have to set it up using apple firmware. If custom will do then which version will be best
