I'm planning on getting the two Underworld movies and was wondering which ones to get, the US releases from Sony or the UK ones from EIV? My understanding is the US releases have superior sound. However I cannot find any comparisons regarding picture quality.
The UK releases can be picked up for around £9 each, whilst the US are almost double the cost. For this reason I would like to hear any comments from people who have been able to compare the releases against each other. If the US releases do have superior PQ, is there enough difference to justify spending twice thhe money?

Thanks for the link. Those are much better prices than the ones I've so far seen. £23 for the two. That's only £5 more than the UK releases. I just need to find out if they have better PQ than the EIV versions. Looking at the screenshot of the reverse of the case, would I be right in thinking that these are the canadian releases. It's a minor irritant to me that some purchases I have received have a mixture of English and French text on the front cover.

Don't touch the UK releases with a six-foot stick. Get the US or Australian discs, they're top notch.

No these are North American discs with a small Canadian ratings logo on it. Most are like that, much like most Canadian discs will have the dual language on the sleeves.

Also I have heard that American (Mpeg4) and UK (Mpeg2?) Underworlds have different codecs. Mpeg4 is considered superior.

I've just ordered both movies from MovieTyme. For £23 and free delivery you can't really go wrong. Thanks for the advice guys.

Well after watching my copy I was very disappointed in the normal DD it seemed very quiet in some of the scenes and also on a few parts the dialogue sounded as though it was in an echo chamber, very strange anyone else have it?

Same old crap bundled in. Come on, you know the answer this, it's EIV after all. Rise Of The Lycans could windup having a 1080i/50hz transfer for all we know.

I had the US versions and now have UK versions. The picture quality looked almost the same to me but the sound (PCM 5.1) is on another level.

Rubbish, the UK disc of Underworld in particular, is an abomination. I loathe to throw around the term 'upscaled', but that's what it looked like to me. There's no fine detail at all in it. I had the German HD DVD and going from that to the UK disc was a vast disappointment. Sold that mofo pretty quickly. Why on earth would you replace the lovely US disc with the UK crap?

Yes, your post is utter nonsense. ;)
Even on my previous 40" screen, the differences were quite noticeable.

The crap UK disc can't be compared to the US disc, it's laughable to even try. EIV's :censored:
MPEG-2 and lossy 5.1 vs. Sony's AVC and 5.1 PCM? LOL!
The German 'dead format' version looks better than the UK disc, for godsakes!
I'd have loved the UK disc to be okay, it would have saved me another £11 on the US version, but it wasn't. It was :censored:.
    Oh my days...

You may not have thought much of the audio but it is a 1.5 Mbps DTS track and sounds pretty damn good. Not disagreeing that lossless would have been preferred and it may also be true that the picture is better on the US Disc but what I'm arguing with is that you have described the UK disc as "an abomination".

Now for that to be true the picture would have to be awful and it demonstrably isn't. I'm viewing it on a 50" plasma and there is plenty of fine detail in the picture, indeed it is one of the better looking discs I own.

Exaggeration on your part is not helpful to anyone who is interested in the film.

I have always thought the UK discs are perfectly fine. Just because it is mpeg2, it doesn't mean the picture will be bad and doesn't automatically mean AVC will always be better. There is plenty detail in the picture for me.

I hate the way people use the term upscaled when they don't really know what the upscaled picture looks like.

Not disagreeing there, some great MPEG2 transfers out there,(Underworld:Evolution has a lovely MPEG2 transfer across the board), this just isn't one of them. Are people defending this crap simply because they paid hard earned money for it?

And while we're on it, how about 'upscaled', as in no difference in detail between an,(allegedly), 1080p transfer and the UK DVD upscaled to 1080p. That clear enough?

    Who's next? ;)

    Hi,
I bought Underworld Evolution while I was in the states and also House of the Flying Daggers both because of the PCM soundtracks. I dont see the point in Blu ray without HD sound but thats just my opinion. Im also after a US version of Underworld so let me know how you get on.

Just noticed that the 2 Underworld films are a decent price at DVDCrave at the moment. Are these Aussie discs on par with the US ones, and what's the difference between this Extended edition of Underworld 1 and the Unrated US one, anything?

Also is there a chance I would be receiving a card through the post from Royal Mail if I was to order them from Australia?

More importantly are DVDCrave any good.

    DVDCrave - Blu-ray Disc - Underworld

    DVDCrave - Blu-ray Disc - Underworld Evolution

I know the "Unrated Extended Cut" contains 12 minutes of additional footage and 11 minutes of replacement footage but not sure if t UEC is the same as the Unrated US one,if that makes sense ?

The Aussie discs are the same as the US ones. My Underworld:Evolution is the Australian version. There was a review on one site that mentioned that the Aus release of Evolution wasn't an MPEG-2 transfer, but it's completely wrong. Looks stunning, regardless.

The Extended Underworld is just another wording for the Unrated version, given that Australian discs, much like UK discs have to be rated.
