Steven Evans reviews the Werewolf Vs Vampire thriller Underworld

So is it worth a look? Or is it just an excuse for Kate Beckinsale to run around in tight Leather?

If anyone was wondering why this movie seems so loud, the Dolby offset is -0db... Sneaky buggers recorded the soundtrack +4db over "normal" :)

Liked this a lot. Yes it is VERY loud! I play most stuff on my Denon at -38db for family viewing. This was being played at -50db it was that loud! (and that was WITH dynamic compression on).

    Just read the review!
The same score on sound as Pirates of the Carribean!

    Sorry! No comparison!
Pirates sound was rubbish! No rear action until the battle scene!
    Underworld - bloody excellent!

    What do think guys?
And I'm talking to the people who aren't afraid to say what you really think!

    Thanks CLH!
Come on guys here's your chance to speak up without being rebuked!

I say Underworld is DEMO material and right up there with The Haunting DTS-ES!

I also claim that Pirates of the Carribean was a load of over-hyped rubbish with just awful sound!
It might as well have been in Dolby Surround or just plain stereo!

    Racquel

As the "individual" who reviewed both films, iwould most certainly stand by my audio acores.
You would be most welcome to have a listen to PotC on my set-up and i would be most surprised if you found it "crap"

I honestly feel that your remarks as to rear channel soundfields indicate that you feel it can only be good if there are constant split surround/directional cue effects. i would take issue with this.Ambience be it inflection or reflection in relation to on screen action is paramount.
Listen to any Gary Rydstrom enginnered soundtracks, whilst there is of course discrete effects alot of what you are hearing is ambience and incidental noise.
As stated i did feel that Underworld was very good but would NOT figure in my reference selection. I guess i stand with the school of thought that believes less is more and overcooking can spoil.

    Just my opinion of course.

    respectfully

    Steven

Well I think POTC was an excellent sountrack.

I do think Underworld was even better though.

Perhaps Steve is correct in that it was "overcooked," but I enjoyed it immensely.

It does bring an interesting question about demo material. Arguably the purpose of a demo would be to "sell" surround to visitors. To that extent the "overdone" Underworld might succeed in that whereas you could find yourself in geek mode with POTC saying "Can you hear those slight breathing effects from the rear left?"

Of course, if a demo is merely for yourself to enjoy, then both films are just fine.

Agreed. of course it's horses for courses but i do not define a good soundtrack simply by how much or what is coming from the rear speakers,
I am much more aware of homogeny between both the speakers themselves and the speakers and film.
By the criteria required by Racquel i would assume that she would think that American Beauty is similarly a "crappy" soundtrack, yet to me it is a joy to behold in terms of design, eloquence and subtlety.
I agree in terms of absolute dynamics and discrete effects The Haunting DTS ES is very good but as a soundtrack i would say that Toy Story 2 is better in terms of design and a continous 360 soundfield all be it at an ambient and understated level at times.

    Just my opinion of course.

I have not watched Cutthroat Island so cannot comment on FoxyMulders remarks but can i say that following his post in the Return of the King thread it would appear that he is not all knowing either, just like the rest of us really.

    Regards

    Steven

I agree. There are many ways to consider it and it is of course personal taste.

I think that personally I want my non-action to conform exactly to the American Beauty type that you outlined and my action stuff to be a bit Underworldy.

One the best is rumoured to be the Armageddon DTS R2. I wonder how that lines up?

Usually takes about 5 days from the despatch email you receive. They normally sell films in both dvd and vcd format so make sure you pick the correct one:lesson:

At no point did I say POTC was 'crap' on this thread, rubbish yes, over-rated yes!

Thanks for the offer to view POTC on your system, but I don't think I could stand to watch it again! Everytime I saw the 'skeleton' crew I thought of, a real classic, Jason and The Argonauts!
Let's just say a 150 minute, slow paced, Walt Disney Live Action film is not my cup of tea!
Your comments of Toy Story 2 is quite correct and I would also like to include Bugs Life to that. Both have excellent sound!

Yes, I love action films but also like 'less-action' films!
Please note one of my past posts regarding the comparisson of Dragonheart DTS vs DD, where I did notice the abscense of a 'light breeze' in the rears of the DTS version!

But I do stand by my inital argument that the Underworld soundtrack is better than POTC (in all it's quiet DTS-ES glory) and is a film I would put in to let people hear how good DD 5.1 can be!

Just watched Underworld, utterly mediocre film, and the soundtrack? Loud doesn't mean good, I found it tiresome after just a few minutes. Or am I just getting old?
