I'v just finished watching 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' dvd , which I really enjoyed , in particular , the extra's disc which was packed to the brim with useful data . As a long time sci fi devotee , I thought I knew most of the intentional product/person placement placed just out of eye/earshot (a brief glimpse of pacman in sarks carrier in Tron etc) but was surprised to find that a minature r2d2 can be seen on the underside of the encounters mothership as it passes overhead - can any other film buffs out there point out any other surprise guests rom other films?

    Gargoyle,

Don't know if this one really counts, but I'll mention it anyway. In "The Abyss" (1989 - James Cameron) (original edition, or Special Edition cuts), during the opening sequences, you can often see a stick-on Garfield, stuck to the inside some of the gang's underwater vessels. (I think it appears twice: once in the main underwater rig, and also in the black woman's pseudo-pod/rescue vehicle.)

Can't say if this was some kind of in-joke or not, by Jim Cameron or the crew, but it can't have been part of the original set-designer's wishes.

Nah I'd say it was totally designed in to add to the lived in mundaneness of the set. eg ghettoblasters in subs , coke machine in rec room, cornflakes , porno on the walls etc. You see the same sort of thing in aliens.

If you watch Lucio Fulci's "The Beyond" there's a wonderful little visual gag made by actor David Warbeck. It was done without the directors knowledge and was overlooked by the editor, so made it into the final print.

During the climatic shootout in the hospital, the two lead characters take the lift down to the basement. During this time Mr Warbeck takes time out to reload his revolver. Watch as he calmly talks to the other actress, whilst pushing a single bullet down the front end of the gun barrel!

He drew this gag to fans attention at a film festival I attended a few years back, before his death.
