I'm passing on this notice about the UltraViolet service:

We want to thank you, our many loyal consumers, for making UltraViolet a part of your home entertainment experience. However, we must inform you that effective July 31, 2019, UltraViolet will be shutting down. Rest assured that UltraViolet and its retail and content partners are working in concert to minimize potential disruptions to UltraViolet Libraries.

Going forward, if you have an UltraViolet Library, you will be receiving direct updates from us and likely directly from the retailer(s) you use to access your movies and TV shows with additional information about your UltraViolet account, details for the shutdown of UltraViolet, and how to enjoy continued access to your movies and TV shows. In the meantime, we encourage you to visit www.myuv.com for further information.

When the only remaining partners are a VideoCD-quality mobile streamer, an ultra-high-end Plexalike and the Sony system exclusive to their own TVs, will we really notice?

Dutifully registered the UV codes I got with physical media, but the playback options were always massively limited (outside of the bl@@dy awful Flixster iOS app). Any purchased digital content has always been through either iTunes (iOS & Apple TV) or Amazon (Fire TV box et al). WOuld be nice if my library was linked and replicated through iTunes as per the US Movies Anywhere program.

Yet another failed digital store/library/DRM scheme to be filed next to Zune, PlaysForSure, Blink etc. Just a shame that media producers in the UK threw their lot in with UV to the exclusion of all else rather than continuing with Google & iTunes code redemption (I’m sure Amazon would have cut them a deal as well). Meanwhile the iTunes content I bought from 2003 onwards continues to play and remains available.

Glad I only rely on physical media. Only thing I need to worry about is the kids using my discs to skate on. I don't think I've ever even registered an UV code.

Same here.

Most (although not all) UK UV codes will transfer over to a Movies anywhere account if you link my uv to vudu and Vudu to Movies anywhere

I got this email from uvvu.com yesterday evening:

We are writing to inform you that the UltraViolet service is planning to shut down on July 31, 2019. You are receiving this message because you signed up for an UltraViolet Library or for a service that created an UltraViolet Library for you.

What does this mean for you?

Between January 31 and July 31, 2019

  • You can continue to access your UltraViolet movies and TV shows through the retailer(s) linked to your UltraViolet Library.
  • You can also continue to purchase new movies and TV shows and redeem digital codes by following the redemption instructions. Depending on the retailer, these new purchases and redemptions may or may not be added to your UltraViolet Library.
  • Linking your UltraViolet Library to additional retailers can maximize your access to your Library and help avoid potential disruption.
After the shutdown date
  • Your UltraViolet Library will automatically close and, in the majority of cases, your movies and TV shows will remain accessible at previously-linked retailers.
  • You can continue to make online purchases and redeem codes, but these may only be available through that retailer, and will not be added to your UltraViolet Library.

What should you do now?
  • As soon as possible, login at myuv.com and choose Retailer Services to verify the retailers linked to your UltraViolet Library. If your Library is not currently linked to a retailer or if you would like to link to additional participating retailers, select one or more retailers to link to your UltraViolet Library.
  • Don't unlink or close your UltraViolet Library, as UltraViolet and retailers will be working together to maximize your continued access to movies and TV shows.
Look for further communications from UltraViolet and your retailers over the coming months, as some retailers may disconnect from UltraViolet before July 31.

Some details may be updated, so visit myuv.com/faq often for the most current information and answers to frequently asked questions.

Thank you for making UltraViolet part of how you enjoy digital entertainment. Please do not hesitate to contact customer support at [email protected] if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,

The UltraViolet Team

I've registered a dozen or so codes and used Flixster probably a handful of times. It wasn't reliable, but handy if I was away working somewhere. Hoping I can get this transferred to iTunes, and if all that is possible then I don't think we'll be missing anything!

The timing is rather annoying after the week-long movie sale on Amazon / Google / iTunes. I'd re-purchased a couple of movies last on iTunes at £2.99 to get a 4K digital copy and fill in some gaps if I had some of the sequels/prequels already; but I'd have probably done the same for a dozen or so other items I have in my UV locker.

But still a ridiculous situation that our digital content can 'disappear' like this. I have little faith that the connectivity in the background will keep working to continue our UV entitlements.

I'd like to know how for one. I can't even get the Vudu site to load.

All of my accounts are UK, Vudu is US only. Even if I do use a VPN/proxy, I might not be able to maintain the account in the future as these IPs are discovered and blocked regularly.

It seems a legit UK way of doing this is blocked.

It’s very simple to open a movies anywhere account and a Vudu account with a VPN plugin like hola.

After that you don’t even need to use a VPN I can redeem most UK UV codes in Flixster and the port straight into iTunes which is as stable and reliable as your going to get.

Certainly better than waving goodbye to uv codes and films

Can't say I'm upset. I like Milla Jovovich, but this movie was a turd. :D

I have over 100 UV films in my collection but I've never once used the service as I'm never away from home in a situation where I would need to use it. I looked at it more as future-proofing for a time when physical media and players no longer exist :(

I've never redeemed a single UV code and I have hundreds.

Those little bits of paper you get with something called physical media, right? ;)

This is why I’ll never go digital and prefer to have the hard copies of everything.
Now then, next job - bring back blockbuster

With VHS.

It's the nature of digital access, be it gaming, music or film. Look at older paid for apps being pulled from the Apple App Store for example. You are essentially renting access

Yeah ok but many people use digital versions for convenience viewing i.e. when commuting, on holiday or as a secondary option when the main system is being used
