Ultra Short Throw Projectors and suitable screens

Hi all,

I've seen the youtube videos that demonstrate what a terrible idea it is to use a UST projector with a conventional pull-down or tripod mounted screen, or even a bare wall. Any ripples, creases or bends in the screen's surface are hugely magnified by the shallow angle that the projector light arrives at the screen. Like the length of shadows at sunset compared to midday.

So screens for these projectors need to be tensioned. But will any type of tensioned screen be good enough? I have seen excellent but expensive floor rising electric tensioned screens, and of course there are also fixed, wall mounted tensioned screens.

But what about pull-down tensioned screens? Are they good/flat enough for use with UST projectors? Or is it safer to assume not, unless the pull-down screen specifies that it is suitable for use with UST?

It will depend on the fabric the screen applies. Matt white or fiber glass are not suitable for UST projector. These fabric surface is not flat, makes the projection image unflat too. Soft pvc fabric with tension system would be fine for UST projector, no matter whether it is floor rising or fixed frame or pull down screen.
