Been wondering this for a while, do you folks think any of the current Blu-ray rental companies will start stocking UHD discs ?. Any news or links ?. I'd sign up in a flash just to watch the titles I'm not prepared to buy.

    Comments welcome.

I contacted cinemaparadiso a couple of weeks ago. They said that they were planning on stocking them, and would be able to provide more detail in May.

Lovefilm replied to my query with a standard "we are constantly working to improve our catalogue" answer...although it sounded like they would try to add the movie title "UHD",so I'm not sure they understood what I was actually asking.

Nah you'll be fine. Just buy whatever you fancy then sell it on the classifieds here for a few bob less. Everyone on here generally snatches up a uhd if its on offer for say 15quid for less liked ones. Not really costing you anymore than a rental and you can keep it if you like it!

Did they provide any detail in May? I've just asked them now via twitter, not sure how responsive they are over there - but right now I don't see anything from them about UHD blu-ray (maybe I'm not looking in the right place).

I asked them a couple of weeks ago as they had started appearing on the site albeit saying unavailable. Their not so helpful reply was 'yes we will offer them but don't have a date.'

I tend to dip into Cinemaparadiso as they seem to get a bunch of releases earlier than lovefilm but are a little slower when swapping discs. At £25 a pop for some UHD's renting seems a good option though as others have pointed out buying and selling here on avforums isn't far off.

Anyone found anywhere that does UHD rentals? Still no sign on Lovefilm as far as I can tell.

On my last visit to my local rental store here in NZ. I was surprised to find that they had three new release UHD titles on their shelves. The attendant said that they will be getting more, but only new releases

Apparently the studios aren't releasing them for rental, they want us to buy them.

Yeah, I suspected this was probably a factor.. Fact is, while I might have been able to (barely) afford a UHD blu-ray player (and then only because it was half-price).. I cannot afford to supplement it with media - certainly not at those prices.

That said though... is there any legal barrier to renting out retail media? Surely this is an option

If cinemaparadiso or lovefilm rent out retail media the studios will stop them (and potentially shut them down).

does anyone know if this has happened before in the early life of formats (eg blu ray) and how long it continued for?

Some bluray releases are still unavailable for rental at first release. They usually become available after a few months though (although not always).

hmm well hopefully things will change soon re UHD... I'm in the can't/won't pay upwards of £15 for a 2 hour feature film camp unless its something truly exceptional.

Found this while searching the question myself. Cinema Paradiso have started doing some, but their 4k library is weak at the moment.

I'm off to check the classifieds: perhaps trades/swaps are the way forward until it's sorted out.

Does no one use Cex like I do, buy the movie, if you don't like it, take it to Cex (or others like ebay) I lose about £6 average and keep the digital code. It's the closest you get to renting them without being stuck with them.

Can usually sell them on here for much less than a £6 loss.

I agree, my point is still the same, buy and sell is the closest you can get to just wanting to check a movie out and not be stuck with it.

I hardly do it anymore but I just use Cex as it's close and I don't have to mess about with postage, etc.

Switched to CP for this reason. Other titles include Sully, Suicide Squad, Point Break and The Town. Morgan was offered as a 4K release but had since become unavailable. There are more 4K releases upcoming too like Lego Batman. They don't seem to have every 4K release available though (and the Star Trek ones don't seem to be available you rent in 4K for me). I have been impressed with the speed of them sending me rentals, and I prefer the way they handle the priority of my rental list over Lovefilm

I currently use Lovefilm £7 per month for Bluray films and find the service to be very good. I am time poor and when I watch a movie I want best pic quality and sound. I can't see this availability improving in 2017 tech is still too new for early adopters.

Another very happy Cinema Paradiso user here. I know they generally work out SLIGHTLY more expensive than their rival, but it's just the small things that make the difference for me. Obviously getting the odd UHD title to rent is a real bonus, but even little touches like being able to add current cinema releases for future Rental is handy. They get my vote anyway.
