I have been thinking about purchasing this disc and have read a few threads regarding it.

I want to be able to set my speakers up to the optimum and also calibrate my tv picture.

I have read about a few places that do this disc for around £12 but they all appear to be the region 1 version of the disc.

Does this make much of a difference when calibrating for a PAL television???

Also, is it worth me considering a SPL meter as well?

    Thoughts appreciated,

    Daz

    Hi

Calibration discs arent region coded, though AVIA and Video Essentials are both for calibrating to NTSC standard (looks good for PAL as well though). If you have mainly R1 films then its best to get one of these two discs.

An SPL meter is an essential purchase if you want to set your AV system up properly.

As far as I know the DVD Platinum is for PAL setup, but you´d need to doublecheck that.

    AVIA disc available here:

    www.ovationsw.com

    Video Essentials here:

    www.ezydvd.com.au

    Ultimate dvd Platinum here:

    www.amazon.co.uk

I used the AVIA disc myself and its excellent.

    Hope this helps

    cheers

AVIA does´nt and neither does Video Essentials as far as I´m aware, dont know about DVD Platinum but I dont think that has either.

I normally end up having to turn down the surround backs a few decibels lower than the readings given by the amps internal test tones.

There was talk of a new version of Video Essentials coming out with calibration for EX/ES but I´ve heard nothing for a while.

The new R1 'Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune-Up' disc contains EX test signals (I don't think ES 6.1 though) and almost all of the relevant tests the AVIA disc has. It is also much cheaper. Most US/CD retailers sell this disc (try dvdboxoffice.com). It also features lots of Dolby Trailers.

Indeed, Ultimate doesn't have EX test signals. You can also find EX test signals on some Optimode discs, for example T2: Ultimate Edition, but I tend to distrust these signals, as faults have occurred in some of them.
