I've imported an mpg file into Ulead Video Studio 8 which has DD 5.1, 448kbps audio.

Yet when it comes to render it to another mpg file the mpg template settings for 'Audio type' is greyed out and i'm left with only DD 2.0.

Why is this and how do I 'unlock' it?

    Thanks

Have you downloaded and installed the Dolby Digital plug in obtainable here :-

    http://www.ulead.co.uk/store/vs/runme.htm#plugin

but I think you will find that even using that you will only get standard 2 channel Stereo - I dont think Ulead yet fully support 5.1

    I have the AC3 plug-in.

You're quite right it doesn't suppport 5.1, just found this out.

Also, there so called 'pro' version Media Studio Pro 7 doesn't support 5.1 either!
I guess you have topay big bucks if you want DD 5.1 licensed software.

    Thanks

It wasn't long ago that software DD 5.1 encoders were £1000 (for just an encoder!)

They've come down a fair bit in the short time since then, as they are included with some mid & higher end editing programs.

IIRC Sony Vegas is the only editing package (at anything close to a sensible price) that offers 5.1 DD.
Computer Editing mag did a review of editing packages offering DD encoding and Vegas was the only one of about 5 tested that offered 5.1 instead of just 2.0

I read that Pinnicle 9 offered 5.1 surround sound. As I'm still fairly new at this, it probably is either a different thing or poor quality, but maybe somebody could put me straight?
    Thanks,

Studio 9 offers Dolby Digital AC3. However Dolby Digital can be in many different flavours such as mono, stereo, 2.1, 5.1 etc and the AC3 in Studio 9 is AFAIK only DD stereo.

Even if you manage to encode DD5.1 with your editing software don't you then have to find an authoring programme thats supports 5.1 too? Which is rare also.

    Yes

But there are a few (mid range) programs around that support it.
ReelDVD , Pinnacle Impression Pro , DVD Architect , DVDlab & the like.

Oh & that Ulead link appears to be working now.

Showing my igronance once more but,
Pinnicle 9 has a graphic when selecting surround sound that allows you to position a 'listener' between 5 speakers. I am assuming that this is to adjust the levels produced from each speaker. Or is this just some play on pro-logic type surround?

That sounds like a "panner" but you will need to use keyframing with it (if it has that) for accurate positioning of the sound with what is displayed on screen. Also a 5.1 encoder is reqd (which as they are very expensive I doubt it does have)

There is nothing wrong with the link to the Ulead site - works perfectly for me - you have to pay for the plug-in so I wouldn't think anyone is going to send it to you for free after thay have had to pay for it.
