Just tried to play Ridge Racer multiplayer using a US and UK version of the game.

Tried both as host and both times the other PSP wouldn't find the hosted games.

I'm aware that JPN and US/UK games are not compatible for multiplayer but I assumed that was due to character sets.

    Any ideas?

No games from different regions are compatiable. Bear in mind that the PAL versions also tend to have multi language support (ie my Everybodys Golf has French, Italian, Spanish, German as well as English).

I thought that a game bought from any region would play but you can not use the ad-hoc mode with games from different regions.

I know, but it's been said since day one in all fairness. I sold most of my US games to get the UK games just before the UK release date.

Hmmm, what did I miss then? Does the host PSP only need a copy of the game then?

You're all over the place with this one, mate! :)

He was complaining that he couldn't play multiplayer with a UK Ridge Racer and a JAP Ridge Racer. You cannot play multiplayer games with games of a different region. It doesn't matter whether the PSP is UK, US or JAP, as all machines are region free for games. It's the software (ie Ridge Racer) not the hardware (ie PSP) that is incompatiable.

You can use one copy of the game and swap it between psp's as it requires loading. Not ideal i know but gets you a head to head.

true - but I still don't see why Sony did this.

    Oh well.

It's not just Sony. It happens with GBA games as well. You can't play a US Pokemon with a JAP or EUR Pokemon. It's just a technical restriction. Not sure of the exact nature, but they didn't do it for s**ts and giggles.

AFAIK, you have to have games from the same region for multi-player, though the actual PSP hardware can come from any region.
