Am I the only one that finds the prices of tablets here in the UK to be completely insane?

My wife wants an iPad 2 but the price of them is just madness. I am trying to talk her into getting a Galaxy Tab 10.1 instead but then I saw the prices of them and they are no better. Myself, I am after a 7 inch tablet and had narrowed it down to the SGT 7+ or 7.7. Then I saw the price of the entry level 7+ with 16Gb and WiFi only at £349 and the rumours on the pricing of the 7.7 are just mind blowing.

Do these people not realise we are in real danger of a double dip recession in 2012?

At the end of the day people seem willing to pay the prices, especially for the iPad's, its burned Motorola in particular last year pricing the Xoom so high bit Samsung seem to be selling fine even at what I also agree are quite high prices.

That said if I was Apple / Samsung and I could get away with charging the prices knowing folk would buy, I would!

I agree, I am just surprised so many people are willing to fork out that kind of cash in the poor economic climate for an item I still see as a luxury item. By that I mean, it doesn't do anything I can't do on my laptop, it's just a bit more portable. Hence being a luxury item in my eyes.

Fair enough but in my eyes this only strengthens my argument. Paying £290 delivered for a refurbished unit with 3 months warranty seems silly. What someone is basically saying is they are happy to buy a unit which is known to have already had issues with only a 3 month warranty. It's already broken once, what's to stop it breaking again?

The seller is also saying "these are refurbished but we are not confident enough to give you any more than 3 months warranty".

It's crazy to throw £290 at them in my very humble opinion.

I'd agree by June we should see a lot more tablets getting down around the £250-£300 mark

That's why i bought a Xoom recently, RRP was slashed just before the Xoom 2 was released so they can be had for £330 (Also got 10% off which bought it just under 300 notes ), while thats still a lot of money for me to spend it did put it in the realm of possibility.

After seeing what main UK sellers are listing the Galaxy Tab 7.7 at I've took a gamble this time and ordered from Panamoz seeing as loads of good feedback from high-end camera buyers.

Can't recommend them myself yet until mine arrives next week (hopefully)!

Gunzzie, dont choose the new 7" over the 7.7" you'll regret it.

Funnily enough I was looking at Panamoz today. Unfortunately I come from the old school of if something looks too good to be true then it almost definitely is. I'll wait to hear back from you though. By the way, most of the positive Panamoz reviews were written by Panamoz as has apparently been proven b y tracking IP addresses. That's what I read.

What makes me super dubious is the fact I read that the 7.7 doesn't release in Asia until the 16th Jan so where are they getting their stock from? I smell a rat. Far too much money for me taking a punt on some unknown retailer.

The main reason, I left their website without buying though was quite simple. The small print states that the warranty is directly through them not the manufacturer. Considering we are in tough economic times and facing the distinct possibility of a double dip recession, companies like these can be here today and gone tomorrow. That means the warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on. That's why I walked away (metaphorically speaking)

Finally, I don't see any main UK sellers listing the 7.7 so not sure what you mean. Certainly none on Google shopping that I would call "main UK sellers"

Edit: None of the above is meant to sound like I'm doubting you. More that I'd love to see some proof to put my own cynical mind at rest :D

Not "Main" as in Argos/Dixons, but I've used Expansys for years: Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 Wi-Fi 16GB (Silver light) Deals, #SAMP681016SUK - Expansys.com UK One of first to get new tech but expensive.

Totally agree on the warranty and I do realise its highly unlikely Samsung UK would cover it. But seeing as Expansys are wanting £525 for the WiFi compared to £330 its one hell of a saving if it comes through and likely a paid repair with Samsung would be less than £200 anyway. (even bigger saving off the 3G version).

Once everyone has them in stock I'd bet £399 becomes the price for the WiFi version.

They do state they have UK distribution so checked with CC company and said I'd still have fraud cover (though it is a specialist Foreign Purchase Mastercard).

Its already showing as despatched with UPS tracking code so I should know soon enough as its a 2-3 day business delivery.

I have imported from Hong Kong before when the original PSP's were released from the likes of Play-Asia so not my first gamble

Lets hope I'm not writing a "I've been scammed" reply next week !

Please keep us updated as to whether your 7.7 comes through, I'm very keen on one of these and it seems as if I've been waiting ages for a UK launch!

I wish the price of Bentleys would take account of the current economic climate.:D
