Had my psp since last December and was looking forward to trying some movies when it was released here ( jap movies are not my thing, and way to expensive ). So I got Saw and Transformers the movie ( i know, but i loved it as a kid ). Now, I have a f/w 1.5 machine and use homebrew stuff alot and even when tricking the machine into f/w 1.52 and 2.0 it just comes up with 'this disc cannot be played'. From what i've read it's not the case with every movie but alot of them, certainly my two anyway. I used WAB version changer 2.5 which supposedly can be used for UMD movie playing but it don't work for me. So it's back to playing Colin Mcrae and Virtua Tennis for the time being.

I bought saw today and it works fine. I have also read on other forums that films like Hidden crounching tiger is multi region same as a few other films but I dont know what the other films are and I dont want to pay and hope for the best.
Uk films do work on Jap machines though I know that because I tried it today they are both region 2.

I preordered several R2 UMD movies from Play.com, I've had my Jap PSP since April.
Hellboy, Resident Evil and Ghostbusters all work fine.

Are you sure it's not something to do with the fact you make reference to fooling the firmware in order to run Homebrew software? This is what I would put your problems down to.

They're not Deals of the Week. It says with any other PSP item. That said, a lot of stores will give them out regardless.

i got both from game (9.99 deal) and when i first tried them they both said to update firmware before they can be played, this was even before i used the version changer to trick the firmware. After I tricked the firmware they both say 'this disc cannot be played'. God knows how you got saw to work on a jap psp.

I had €60 worth of vouchers for HMV knocking about, so decided to get some UMD films on Thursday. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Bourne Supremacy & Alien all work fine on my Japanese PSP!

To confirm, I tried Dawn of the Dead R2 on my Jap PSP, and it worked fine. Guess you have a dud PSP (that or you have US PSP and don't know it)

Got another 2 movies from Play that arrived today, they both work fine here under V2 of the firmware.

It does sound suspiciously like the program you are using to "trick the firmware" has screwed your PSP somewhat.

If your psp is EU then it will be 1.52 not 1.50 like my JAP jobby.
Can anyone try those 2 movies on a JAP 1.5 and see if they work for them, I haven't screwed my psp as it still works fine in every capacity, just the only 2 umd films i have ain't working.

You will probably find that the version changer is the cause of the problem. I suspect they were only able to test it with certain items. By all accounts it works fine with the games. Maybe the movies work differently. I am contemplating taking the plunge and updating my Japanese V1 PSP with the update on the Saw movie disk. I bought the 2 in 1 USB lead (charging and data transfer) to get the discount on that.

At some point someone may hack V1.52. I think the UK releases work under V1.52 (but Sony would prefer you to update to V2.00 of course. Virtua Tennis had the V1.52 update as did the Saw UMD Movie disk.

To be honest mate, I don't think anyone is going to hack 1.52. Most people are concentrating on 2.0 at the moment, or that rollback software. I was waiting for a 1.52 hack but the general concensus from pspupdates.com forums was that people were ignoring it and moving onto 2.0 since it was coming out so soon and had better features.

Pretty much. That or just buy a 1gig memory stick and convert your own DVDs.

I will say this though. The quality of UMDs are a lot better than converting, mainly because Sony won't release proper support for it yet.

I think it may well be the version cahnger that is the problem. I tried both 2.0 and 2.5 versions of it and ended up with the same results. I did talk to a guy in Game where I bought them and he'll gladly take them back and i'll use the dough to pre order my xbox360. It ends well and i'll give movies a miss I think, I do have a 1 gb card but can never be arsed to convert anything. Playing Virtua Tennis is too much fun, although bloody difficult.

Your problem should be sorted if you update your PSP with the latest version (or the next version that comes out). Of course, you'll lose Homebrew.

Ive had a jap psp since january and i brought xxx2 on umd from game and it works fine :)
if your havin problems u can always use ur own mp4 films on ur mem stick and that way u dont have to upgrade ur firmware :)
