Most of O2's network can be Edge enabled via just software upgrades.

Rumours are that you will need to sign up for a 24 month x£35 minimum contract in order for O2 to recoup some of the revenue's that they have been forced to share with Apple.

40% of revenues? Ouch. Installing EDGE on their network after spending all that money on 3G licenses and hardware? Double ouch.

I can't see how O2 can possibly make a profit with that kind of deal unless people are unlocked into very long and very costly contracts.

If it is, I'll buy it immediately. If however it isn't, I'll think I'll wait for feedback from users on here.

o2 have been upgrading the network to support EDGE for a few weeks now.

A 2 year contract will not really matter as you can buy a revised iPhone at any time as it is not contract dependant. You pay full price for one so you'll not have to await upgrade time or anything with o2.

... and I'm expecting Pamela Anderson over to cook my tea.

    Dreamland i'm afraid.

Tomorrow's announcement will be for the 2G 8GB model. Hopefully they will reveal data plans (pray for unlimited data).

Apple will surely insist that unlimited data is included in all tariffs.

One of the other forums members works for O2 tech dept. He doesn't take part in this section of the forums but i made him aware of it last night. He's out of the office today for some reason ;) but who knows he may stick his head in later to see what's going on..although I suspect he's under a huge NDA so not sure what he can tell anyone....certainly he's not told me anything.

The Apple and o2 shops are currently offline.

    Unlimited data on all tariffs. £35, £45 & £55

o2 have also created a agreement for 7500 WiFi hotspots around the UK via Cloud. These are free.

    From the unveiling...

Visual Voicemail is enabled! Unlimited data with £35, 45, 55 plans -- no worry tarrif on EDGE and GPRS. Hmmm, no 3G -- big surprise.

10:16 - Steve gets back on stage for Q&A. We ask: Why not 3G networks?

Steve: "The 3G chipsets are real power hogs. Handset battery life cuts power to 2-3 hours. Our phone has a talk time of 8 hours and that's really important when you want to use your phone for internet and music. 3G needs to get back up to 5+ hours, something we think well see later next year."

    So there we have it.

£269, Nov 9th, 8GB model. No 3G until late next year - I imagine next September's annual Apple meet for launch of the 3G worldwide model. Prob 16/32GB then too.

See you're on engadget too ;)

Looks like they're pretty much bringing out a 3g one next year then from what Steve Jobs just said. Has anyone with an iPhone browsed on EDGE? Is it really that slow?

    Hmm that's a bargain then.

£269+18 months at a minimum of £35 a month with a very poor txt and call allowance. (compare that tariff to O2's own £15 a month simplicity tariff)

£900 give or take a quid then for a 2G handset with an MP3 player.

    Think I'll pass thanks :thumbsdow

Nice to see O2 are passing on Apple's revenue stream to their customers!

    Terrible tariffs:

    £35 - 200mins - 200 text - unlimited data
    £45 - 600 mins - 500 text - unlimted data
    £55 - 1200 mins - 500 text - unlimited data

Ok don't laugh, but won't it be possible to get hold of a locked to O2 iPhone and use an O2 PAYG SIM card instead of a contract one?

In the States it was not posisble to use any other simcard (a different sim also on contract or pay as you go) from the same network, so I assume it will not possible over here either, unless the iPhone is unlocked.

I was more than happy to pay the £269 for the phone, even though it's not 3G. However at those tariff prices, I'm not going near it. I easily send over 500 msgs a month, so that would put me over the £45 (I currently only spend £30 and get 750 msgs, 300 mins, and get a free upgrade).

I think someone should tell Jobsy we have 3G over here. Nice phone, poor features apart from the interface because every other phone does the same things, absolutly crazy price. £269 for a 2G phone, it HAS to be the ONLY 2G phone at that price level on sale in the UK today!

And does the iPhones price drop as the tariffs go up? No one has mentioned it?
Don't predict this to sell too well and everyone will wait for a 3G model.
