I'm shortly gonna be purchasing a DVD/DivX player on which to play my DVD's and also my vast quantity of DivX vid's.

I would also like to utilise the player as part of my hifi setup as an MP3 player.

From the reviews that I've read it appears that the interface's for browsing MP3's on CD (or preferably DVD) are very limited.

e.g. They can only read the first X chars of a filename + you can't browse MP3's whilst one is playing, + you can only select random on a folder, not the whole disc, etc

Does anyone know of a player that has a good GUI which makes for easy use of MP3???

    Thanks v much

A chipped XBox with xbox media centre beats anything else hands down here, although it's not ideal for DVD playback. I'm thinking about getting a Sony 785 or 955 myself.

    Woah,

I had not idea that was possible on the XBox !!!

Does the XBox have to be modded??

Is this something that thats done quite regularly?

(presumably it doesn't play DivX's, or does it???)

    Thanks for the tip tho.

chipped xbox plays every type of media file you can get in the drive
MP3, xvid, wma, divx, dat, mpeg, etc (and any region dvds)(may not play DVD+R media)

or if you can live with the filename restrictions then the DK Digital 915 dvd player
from ebuyer.co.uk costs £52 delivered and is really good (cr@p remote tho, works but looks naff) and can also play any media files the xbox can

I have both, and they are great.

Xbox is great for media centre, but it's bloody noisey! I got me a SONY DVP-ls985 for £110 today and so far it's rather great! Does DivX, SACD and Progressive Scan....it's a pretty box too and goes marvellous with the matching lv500 receiver that EmpireDirect have reduced to £66 atm!

Would you happen to know if the 915 can random-play a DVD R with say 450 MP3 files on it?

I'm looking for a cheap "jukebox" solution for our cafe so that we can put one disk in of a morning and leave it playing all day for say 14 hours without having to touch it again. We'd like to keep our CDs safely out of harm's way and keep the place a bit tidier too.

Can anyone comment on the 915s ability to play Divx / Xvid from DVD-Rs? The website lists the following compatibility:

    DVD / VCD / CD / CD-R / CD-RW / MP3 / SVCD / HDCD / Foto CD/ xVID / DivX versions 3.11, 4.02 and 5.1

I want one for the girlfriends place so I can watch decent stuff whilst at her place (she only has 4 terrestrial channels, which makes going to her place a little like going cold turkey compared to my setup!).

I agree that the Xbox is superb once it is networked, but depending on your intended uses, I believe that you can replace the DVD drive with any PC DVD drive and it will then play anything (CDRW, DVD RW +/- etc) apart from original Xbox games. If you want to play Xbox games, you will need a Samsung 616T (http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/xb-616t.html).

Personally, I load all my backups to the XBox via the network, so the DVD drive is only used to play original DVDs.

Just to update you all on this one....

I went out and bought an Xbox especially for its media centre and I have to say...

    ITS ABSOLUTELY F**KING AWESOME....

I've installed a 160GB hard disc in it and its immense. It plays every type of media you could imagine, will stream Radio AND TV off the internet, downloads weather forecasts, steams movie and games trailers, I can copy games no problems, play on xbox live for free, the list is endless.

Seriously if you've got an xbox, chip it, if you haven't buy one (i did)!

I have the DK-digital 339. its more or less the same as the 915 but very slim.
Yes it plays most file types from most types of disc including dvd+r/w, dvd-r/w.
but it WONT play .wmv or Quicktime files (AFAIK) so all the people who say it plays all the files their pc plays need to check this out first. it plays .wma which is audio only.
Its a very good player and a great price from ebuyer.
