I just took delivery of a 37LZD85 today. While it seems like a pretty good set, there is something that has struck as being far below acceptable: the way it handles 24fps. With the function enabled judder naturally disappears and motion becomes very fluid, but unfortunately it also introduces some REALLY annoying 'artifacts'. I don't know what to call it, let alone describe it. It's as if moving objects get a sort of "aura" around them. You know when the sun gets really hot you can sometimes see the heat emanating from the asphalt... the aura sort of looks like that. I was watching a bit of "Casino Royale" on BD and in a scene where a plane flies across the screen, the plane (one with propellers) almost had what looked like exhaust heat coming out the back. I'm not talking about motion blur or smearing because frankly, the way this set handles motion in general is outstanding (at least compared to the Toshiba 42Z3030D I had for less than two weeks). Also, if I disable 24fps the auras disappear. I will try to post a couple of pictures in the near future. Other than that, the set's great. The backlighting seems to be very even, no dead pixels, and no buzzing:thumbsup:

That doesn't sound too good - does it do it with all BR discs or just casino royale? Shame because from what you say this set performs brilliantly. I am taking delivery of the 37LZD800 next week ... I will see what happens with that one - probably the same seeing as they are practically identical!

Maybe can be resolved with a software update or it could be just a fault with this particular set. I seem to recall the review of this set on Trusted Reviews claimed it handled 24fps brilliantly. Lets see how this develops. Good luck.

This is taken from the TrustedReview of the LZD800

"More good news finds motion looking fluid as well as clear, even when watching notoriously tricky 24p sources such as the colourful, motion-packed opening credits of Casino Royale on Blu-ray."

Your set should also produce these results:confused:

Trusted Reviews wouldn't lie would they?

I've tried with "Pirates of the Caribbean 2" and 24fps on that was also screwed up. The good news is though, that even with the 24fps function disabled, there's hardly any judder. In fact, it's practically non-existent. Motion handling on this set is exemplary to say the least, so you don't really need to enable 24fps. I watched 'Children of Men' last night and in slow panning shots only judder was visible if you really (really!) strained your eyes looking for it... and even then it was almost imperceptible:thumbsup: I really hope my set is not faulty, because, as I've already mentioned, this a replacement set for the Toshiba 42Z3030D I had for less than two weeks and I don't want to go through the hassle of having to send it back again (I live in Denmark but bought the set from a UK-retailer). I'm gonna try to have a look at the opening sequence of "Casino Royale" tonight with and without 24fps enabled.

Good luck with that. Lets see how accurate trusted reviews is! Please let us know what you find:thumbsup:

Is the pnr turned off ?

It would be interesting to hear what Panasonic say.

I just tried the opening sequence of "Casino Royale" with and without 24fps and to tell the God honest truth I couldn't really tell the difference: both were judderless. With 24fps enabled motion tends to be more fluid but it looks artificial in a way (not unlike a Toshiba with film stabilization set to smooth). As things are now, I'm definitely not going to use 24fps because the artifacts it introduces certainly aren't worth it. Of all the BDs I've tried so far, the problem is most visible on "Casino Royale". Another disc, "The Punisher", also suffered from it, but not to the same degree. Perhaps it varies from disc to disc? Hope someone gets a LZD85 soon, so they can post their impressions.

Yes, pnr is off. I've tried it with and without but no difference.

Hi, I set my TX-37LZD85 up today. My Marantz DVD player looks great upconverted, Freeview is passable. Now here are the bad bits. I have an older Xbox 360 that only has a component output and even thought the T.V is an 1080P model it will only accept a 1080i signal through component.
When the screen is dark there is quite noticeable backlight bleed in all four corners of the screen.
The worst thing is the 24fps mode. With my HD DVD player connected the picture is great when still (almost 3D) and motion is very fluid BUT it creates very bad artefacting which is just not acceptable. Also according to a review I read in Home Cinema Choice you can turn off the 100Hz mode, well if so how? I cant find the option. The other bad points I can live with but the 24fps mode...... Think I'm gonna have to contact Panasonic.

I posted this elsewhere but the situation you guys describe is exactly how it SHOULD be. The 24fps mode turns the Motion Pro on and off with 1080p24 sources. In either case there should be no judder. With it off there will be some blur but no artefacts. With it on there will be no blur but some artefacts. It's your choice. If you want the film to look like it should you should leave it off.

Leave this option off - it is a motion estimation algorithm and will always have some distortion.

I'm using a Sony PS3 to watch BDs on my 37LZD85. I have only watched one BD, namely "Triple X" with Vin Diesel.

In all panning scenes there is judder. I have tried with 24fps on and off (and also turned the 24fps setting to on, off, and auto on PS3 and all combinations of both.) I cannot see any difference at all. The judder is not removed. I never get the artificial-looking picture that some have mentioned, and I never get any artefacts at all.

So I'm wondering, does anyone know of any issues with PS3 and 24fps movies? Many have said the LZD85 handles 24fps very smoothly with no "telenecine" judder, including you, Lyris, in your review. I wonder, what can I do, as this whole 24fps judder thing really annoys me. Why don't movie producers or movie camera makers just change their frame rate to 25 or 30 or 50 anyway??

;-) Quod

There's none that I'm aware of, no.

The whole industry's built around 24fps, so it's just what they're comfortable with. It has a certain look, and there are easy ways to convert it to video, etc. In fact some films in the past were shot at 30fps, but not any more.

The artificial look will be added by turning the badly labelled "24p film" option on in the TV's options menu, not the PS3.

Jumping in somewhat late...

I also have a TX-37LZD85, which I'm playing my Cambridge Audio DVD player through. I am finding that when I switch the DVD player to P-SCAN (which I'm assuming is progressive) the TV screen goes blank - is there something I have to enable on the TV or something?

Thanks,

Toby
