I am torn between buying the R1 or R2 version of LOTR two towers extended edition, according to future entertainment the film has the following sound modes for the R1:

English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround), English (Dolby Digital 5.1 EX), English (DTS 6.1 ES)

    and for R2:

English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround), English (DTS), English (DTS 6.1 ES)

I have prog scan for R1 and R2 and so the main reason for buying the film for me is the DTS soundtrack. However I only have a 5.1 DTS Receiver, so will the sound for DTS 6.1 ES be the same as DTS on my amp.

I have had a similar problem choosing between R1 and R2 for matrix reloaded and made the wrong choice by getting R2 as it's 5 minutes less than R1 (probably the best bits have been censored).

    Can anybody please advise?

Both The Two Towers and Matrix Reloaded (except for language differences) are exactly the same on R1 and R2.

Reloaded is not cut by 5 minutes, that is PAL v NTSC.

    How about getting the cheapest?

DTS 6.1 will just come out as 5.1 on the amp.

Many Thanks NW you've answered all my questions.

It seems like it's just down to price and therefore the Scottish blood in me is forcing me to plum for the R1 as its £2 cheaper than the R2 (I'll be able to get a pint for that).

    cheers

I went for the R1 of the first film. It was only £16 at the time from Amazon.ca.

I also don't know what to get with The Two Towers. I would like the R1 but cannot get below £25.

The packaging on the R2 is not as good as the R1. It looks the same, but the R2 uses inferior thinner cardbooard.

I also noticed you have the similar setup to my one. I even had the same CD player for a while.

I went for the R1 EE for 24.99 from movietyme. yes more expensive then the dvdsoon one but it all comes down to credit on switch and visa card.

you can get the UKR2 for 17.99 from dvd.co.uk.

but I fancy getting the R1 this time round (having FOTR on UKR2)

The discs are exactly the same..unless some extras need to be cut for the 12rating. but that isn`t really a problem. the sondtracks are the same as well. if you buy from dvdsoon the 2.0 track will be replaced with a french 2.0 that`s all.

PS don`t rely on futurent's specs just look for the press releases on any news site, they are far more accurate.

    Thanks.

they are essentiall y the same. R1 is NTSC and R2 is PAL if you don't care about that:
R1 has original burnt in subs for elvish spoken parts, R2 has player genereated, if that doesn`t tip the balance (either way)
R1 has better packaging (at least it had last time)
    The choice is yours.

well not really as we leanred in may. Choice is just an illusiion created by those with power and those without.

the choice has been made. you now only have to understand why you did it.

Looks like R1 then - it is £1 dearer on cd-wow than R2.

If anyone has any other comments before I place order, please post away....

Whwn it comes to packaging if you get the box set (with gollum statue) then the oackaging is much much better than the norma R2 release.

I was going to go for the R1 version as my FOTR is R1 but having seen the above post for the R2 version at £17.99 i am now very tempted to go for that as £7 is pretty much another dvd

Specs for both these films on Region 1 and region 2 may be the same but as various threads have shown some of us are concerned by PAL speedup but besides that id like to make the point that so far i have never been let down by a New Line release yet and only America and Canada will be getting the New Line versions, sure you can say the british version will be sourced from same print as some one said last year about Armageddon (( it sounded inferior on Pal to the Criterion edition )), ive ordered region 1.

    At 24.99? I don't think so!

Try DVD pacific for a US cover copy at £17.23 plus shipping (they ship very early too). Deep discount dvd is £17.39 plus shipping.

Or as previously mentioned £19.86 at DVDSOON but this will be a Canadian cover (if that kind of thing bothers you), not sure if that includes shipping.

All of these options work out less than £24.99. (do CDWOW ship US or Canadian discs these days?)

DVD Pacific are pretty good (although I still havent figured out how they come up with the shipping costs) and Deep Discount were very good until earlier this year when their delivery times and reliability took a nosedive, but it would appear to be on the mend now and they are back up to scratch (it would seem).

Apparently according to Michealdvd.com.au the pal verson had a slightyl beeter picture as well. I suppose it just the sound problem which may or may not be there.... I couldn't stand the NTSC judder on the 2 dvd verion (in my mind or not) and traded it for the R2 pal version so the R2 collectors box will be it for me. I don't think you can go wrong in any version really..... just enjoy the film!
