Well I finally have my two PB2-Plus subs!!

For those of you that may remember, I started the following post on the 19th November (the day I placed the order):

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=103444

They were delivered 9th January - 10 days shy of two months! The delay was apparrently due to SVS moving to bigger/better premises and their 240volt testing equipment not working properly. They weren't prepared to send the subs without the testing they carry out. As frustrating as it was, I am happy they took this approach. To have to return these monsters would not be cheap or easy.

I live in a 'No through' road which is only one vehicle wide most of the time as cars are parked on one side. So the delivery guy from Bax Global turned up in an 18 tonne truck. He had two deliveries -mine and then a smaller one to British Aerospace!! When I met him, he said that it would be handy if I had a fork lift as he had no lifting tailgate! He wasn't entirely happy, but I got him to help me lower them off his truck (from not much under 5') and carry them to my house (about 100 metres from where he parked)! The moral here is, make sure you have the ability (strength, friends etc.) to receive these subs as Bax are not responsible for getting them off there truck. You have to supply the means to do this, though I think you may be able to ask for a smaller vehicl and/or tail lift.

I thought it maybe interesting/useful to put some pictures of the unpacking and try and give an idea of size. I'll try and get round to it soon.

    So how do they sound?

Well I set mine up using my amp's set-up facility which uses a microphone to do this. With experiment I now have the subs at a little over quarter volume for DVD played at reasonable volume. At lower volumes I change the volume to about a third. The sound is incredible (all relative, I know) but I have acheived what I was after (read the thread from the 19th November). They blow the socks of the Paradigm but to be fair, these are bigger in every way than the Servo 15. I know that if I could have got hold of another Servo 15 then I would not have made this purchase. In my best guess, I would say that one of these PB2-Plus would not be far off the capabilties of two Servo 15s. Two of these PB2-Plus is a different story. As I experienced at Event II in the PJ Demo Room, I now have effect of immense sub power (they can physically vibrate the sofa I'm on and you can detect the pressure changes) but without harsh volume. the effect is awsome. As an example, the scene in Star Wars - AOTC at the beginning where the spaceship comes in to land on the landing pad. The camera shows the ship flying over you head (as if you were on the landing pad), well as this happens I get serious amounts sub, vibrating me!! and actually detect differing air pressure which only goes to give the immersive feeling of actually being on that landing pad. It has to be experienced.

    Well enough waffle for now.

I'll try and add some more pictures. :smoke:

How much did you end up paying for them by the time they were delivered? I did some (probably wrong) calculations and reckon they are about £1k delivered. Is this about right?

The SVS next to a Paradigm. The SVS goes back further than the Servo but it's not so easy to see that in the photo....

My order included two 8 metre Better Cables interconnects but due to the delay in getting the subs to me, I was only charged for one.

    So the maths:

Total charge by SVS (inc. Better Cables and Shipping)

$2,667.00 converted by VISA at just over 1.78 $ to the £

    = £1,498.00

Plus Customs Import Duty and VAT of £377.00

    Grand Total = £1,875.00

    or

    £937.50 each.

The exchange rates have been very kind to us at the moment.

Porn indeed. Pity there isn't a 'Reader's Subs' section!!

    Re the Servo 15 comparison....

Well the PB2's are in another league. I don't know if it is fair to compare such a monster as SVS finest with the Paradigm. The Servo is an excellent sub and if I could have found a second one then I most probably would not have gone to the expense of importing two subs from the States. I would assess (very roughly and certainly not based on any measurements) that two Servos would approach (and maybe equal or even just exceed) a single PB2-Plus. Two PB2's however, are untouchable (at the price). The ability to physically shake the the sofa and effect a detectable change in pressure....if so desired (and I do)....is amazing. They really do complete my system. For those of you who were at Event II and experienced the Daredevil sequence in the PJ HiFi demo room, you have heard what I am now experiencing at home!!

With music, they don't intrude in any way, they simply add depth and warmth with great control. They just feel like they are never trying.

After calibrating with the Pioneer amp I have found that at low to medium volumes for film or music I run the subs at around one third volume and reduce this to one quarter at high volumes.

I'm still in 'shock and awe'.

    Porn indeed.

    LMAO mufu, classic one...

They look drool-inducingly good. If two Servos were no match for a single PB-2 (by a long way) I'd gladly import one and sod the "saving money".... uh oh, here I go again....:D

I wondered how long the spiel :lesson: you were giving me at the weekend about downgrading etc was going to last. Not very long by the sounds of it ! :D :smoke:

Actually I am seriously thinking about getting another sub. Although I would love to have one of these in my house I wont be able to - one my wife (honestly) wont countenance anything so big in the room and secondly it's downward firing and I have a very old and somewhat creaky wooden floor. I am getting another ASW750 (yes I know it isnt the same thing) on loan to see if two of them will get me slightly closer to Richards bass nirvana (but somehow looking at the PB2'S spec I very much doubt it!).

Gonzo - yeah but thats about $3,500 and is about the size of your average dining table . It definately has more WAF though given the finish.

Is there any chance that SVS will start doing th PB2 in other finishes ? I notice that the PB1 is available in several wood colours.
