In a 6.1 set up is it possible to have two rear speakers connected to the same speaker connector on the amplifier?

Or will this blow the system / affect performance?

If you connect both speakers in series it should not be an electrical problem, the acoustical problem is that if you do not sit equidistant from the speakers then time alignment and spl's relative to the seating position may cause an "out of balance" presentation from the rear four speakers.
A true 7.1 speaker output enabled amp/processor will allow for these factors.
