    Hi all!

The Prestige (2006) and The Illusionist (2006) are two movies that always left me confused. It always felt like one is the extension of the other or vice-versa. I had this thought of researching twin movies long time ago, and while researching the subject came across number of triplet movie examples. I've listed the most interesting examples and summarised the how/ why twin movies happen in an article Twin movie phenomena.

Hope you find this as interesting as I did.

and I have created this awesome illustration for it (the attached picture). I am really proud of it, what do you think?

What movies did you find to be too similar?

I love the Prestige and the Illusionist. I don't really see them in the same vein but I know what you mean. Just like Armageddon (1998) and Deep Impact (1998) Similar content but completely different movies.

Armageddon is a very competent popcorn flick, I've not met many people who didn't at least enjoy it.

Star Wars A New Hope and Star Wars Force Awakens. I don't know why but these two I find very similar :)

It is. Its box office gross is proof of that. Films like Armageddon are the reason alot of people go to the cinema; they are thoroughly entertaining. For the record he didn't say oscar winning masterpiece, he said popcorn flick.

I always though Deep Rising and Alien 4 had an similar feel to them.
Although Deep was better and more fun but bombed and Alien 4 made over double its cost.

    Popcorn flick doesn't mean garbage.

Star Wars is a competent popcorn flick.
Jurassic Park is a competent popcorn flick.
Back to the Future is a competent popcorn flick.
The Avengers is a competent popcorn flick.
Guardians of the Galaxy is a competent popcorn flick.

Armageddon was incoherent, stupid and abrasive, just like the Transformers films. Just my opinion of course, but I think its fairly demonstrable.

All the films you listed are critically acclaimed AND good movies in the classic sense...the 2 latter films you listed are generally known as great popcorn flicks, which are movies you can somewhat enjoy. You are being too analytical. It didn't make millions of dollars for no reason...

Dollars mean diddly squat in terms of quality, although they mean everything to studio success. Transformers makes squillions worldwide, and I wouldn't wipe my arse with a transformers script.

Nothing to do with being analytical; it should be easy to tell a good popcorn blockbuster from a bad one.

Dollars mean everything. It means people love these kind of films. As I said the quality of the film is redundant. All i'm saying is it's the kind of film that is great to watch on the big screen or UHD if you have a free afternoon, or generally want to be entertained with big explosions and set pieces. Basically all Micheal Bay films.

Mission to Mars and Red Planet. Both extremely similar in that they are both equally crap!

And look who they voted for, popular does not equate to being quality.

I never said armageddon is a quality film. Read again. I simply said it's entertaining, due to 1. Its budget and 2. Its cast. Budget allowed the grand scale of the set pieces I imagine. Looks brilliant in HD with surround sound on a 55" 4K LED T.V.

Whyatt Earp and Tombstone. Whilst the former may be more historically accurate ( ??? ) the latter is far more entertaining ( for me ) and a good ol fashioned western.

It's not worth debating. It's the 'In' thing these days to bash anything with Michael bay attached, it makes you look like a sophisticated film fan.

People forget that films like Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon and even the first Transformers had pretty decent reviews both on the big screen and later in various dvd review magazines.

For added effect, make sure to praise Del Toro's Pacific Rim for it's self aware homage to the monster genre and forget that it's a badly written, badly acted steaming pile of excrement.

There was also San Andreas (good) and San Andreas Fault (awful) ... Bugs Life and Antz ... but it is a thing - sometimes exacerbated by the script hawking around the studios

No, I remember coming out of both Armageddon and Transformers feeling crushed, insulted, angered, and bitterly disappointed. Nothing to do with it being 'in fashion'; I've been bashing Michael Bay for years.

Ugh. Who ever thought it would be a good idea to cast Gary Sinise as the star of this (or anything else).

    Dantes Peak and Volcano

To be fair, both were about the same. Neither great nor awful IIRC.
