TV on iMac - is it possible?

Hello there,

I'm thinking of buying an iMac.

One job I want to do, is to burn my VHS collection onto DVD. Is this going to be possible with an iMac?

Put another way, can you capture audio and video from a TV/VCR on an iMac?

I know it's possible with a PowerMac by buying a TV Card, but is it possible to get a USB/FireWire plug-in thing with video(yellow)left & right audio (white, red) and TV connection?

Thanks in advance,

Yes, quite a few USB solutions available for video input...But only one for USB with a built-in TV tuner....

Can you send a link to one available to the UK, from my own net-research I found a version of the EyeTV, but it costs $329, I'm guessing about £200.

It's a bit annoying, people keep banging on about how great Macs are over PCs, but for anything worth doing you're paying through the nose for something you could get for a PC at a fraction of the price.

Any advice?

It might cost more than a PC, but the difference is that it will work straight away without fuss!

I have the Eye Home, the Eye TV 400, 200 and mini DTT.

This enables me to record two programmes off freeview simultaneously and encode VHS or any other analogue source to MPEG2.

This can then be edited within the EYE TV software, exported to Toast, and burned onto a DVD.

Very easy to use and works like a treat on an iMac G5

IMHO I think you find it will cost exactly the same if not more on the PC if you want the same kind of quality and useability...

Duncan,

Seems like you have great experience of this...

Have you tried linking up an addition monitor/tv/projector? see my post: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=265503&highlight=imac

Edit - sorry ... read the thread title and not really the thread itself ... you could try the elgato tv-ez device for analogue tv and see if you can get it to tune into the UHF output from the vcr ? http://www.elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyetvez

Alternatively borrow/buy a cheap dvd-recorder and then burn to dvd and import into the mac from there ? ... how many tapes do you have to do ?
