I'm trying to make up my mind whether an iDTV such as the Sony KD28DX40 or Phillips 28DW6557 would be able to provide a better digital picture quality than say a Nokia 221T and a Panasonic PL1 or Thomson 28WF401G. Anyone got any experience of these able to provide any pointers or advantages/ disadvantages? - connecting audio system, upgrades etc

PS. In Comet they managed to get the Phillips set showing Freview pictures with heavy analogue ghosting on the images! - takes real talent :)

In general IDTVs are better than seperate boxes.

I won't say that IDTV is more unreliable as they are not.

    Advantages
One less remote, better picture, saves the RGB Scart for DVD, better build - ie it has to last as long as the TV, future proof.

    Disadvantages
More expensive TV, awkwards for recording (just get a box for recording).

A good quality IDTV will make box & TV look poor.

    Yes...in theory...

But we all know that IDTV owners have had bother getting new software downloads - the box manufacturers have been much better at doing this.

You can also carry a DTT box around to different TVs - ie if you go on holiday to somewhere with DTT reception...

Eventually IDTVs will be best - in the short term, I'd stick to an upgradable box.

Well I have had 3 updates off Sony so far in over 3 years of ownership.

The picture from the DTVA is definately not quite as good as the DX20 tuner, the Nokia Mediamaster however hasn't crashed (just locked up once on power on) since ITV/On Digital went bump, but has a dire operating system.
